Been lurking a few weeks but bought a 1990 BMW 325i for the first time.

This will be my first car I'm restoring and I'm hoping to teach myself and do a lot of the work myself. I've always been interested in mechanics and cars and this seems like a great opportunity to learn, and with a great community of people who have done the same. It may take me longer and be more expensive in the long run, but I'm really keen on treating this as a learning curve and doing as much myself.

The engine seems to runs well (yet to do a compression test) but no cause for concern; the ride and feel was a bit ropey. So far I've refreshed the brakes, handbrake and power steering, and over the next few weeks am hoping to replace the bushes, shocks and springs.

The big task in the long run is going to be dealing with the body. The only proper rust-rot seems to be the battery compartment and jacking points but quite a bit of surface rust through the wheel arches and scratches all over the paint.

Looking forward to getting involved in the community :)

Welcome that's a very nice saloon, it's worth noting that it's a late SE model which makes it a bit more desirable. You get the extras like shadowline, on board computer, the headlamp washers, which it's good to see it still has fitted. It would be great to see what interior it has fitted.

Ah I didn'tknow that actually! It seemed quite high specced what with the LSD and heated seats but it wasnt advertised as an SE so thats good to know.

Here's the interior, its a Silver leather interior with the OBC like you say. Looks a bit tattered, in places but should be recoverable. I changed over the rear centre console as somebody had installed a massive 90s Mobile Phone attachment which left a huge hole in it. Any tips on a new car mat for the drivers seat?

Those heated seats are a nice option. It's amazing what can be to revive old leather so it would be worth giving the seats some attention.

Sadly the genuine mats are NLA as far as I'm aware, one option is to fit genuine 1 series mats, it's just a case of finding the closest colour. The other option is aftermarket which I did about 8 years ago. They're still holding up okay.

It also looks like you have a US version front valance with the double cut out.

No the double cut out was for cars that had aircon fitted as standard, which this one does. (as did a lot of American cars)

Novel placement for the heated seat switches though, never seen that before.

I would agree that with a bit of elbow grease those seat would come up nice, :thumb:

Yeah they were on that rear centre console originally but whoever put the bulky mobile phone holder in moved them up there. Strange choice I agree but at least they work!

I am just surprised the loom stretches that far :D although I haven't tried it myself.

Worth getting the aircon working well, especially as it was factory standard by the look of it

Good info there, I had only seen it on US cars. Makes sense now as they all seem to have aircon

Great spec SE this! Worth looking around for an R134a conversion sticker in the engine bay for the air con, may have already been done. Unless it is running nice and cool anyway! I have a very good standard front lip if you need one as I swapped to a iS lip.

So much info available on this forum for practically everything ever needed on the E30 so you'll have no trouble finding what you need here.

Thanks

Nice spec car , as you mentioned the jacking points are needing attention just beware the jacking points are the reinforced sill area and not the square underneath the front floor pans .

L overly car, a great starting point and worth a few bob to be sure in today's market.
Just remember every descent from factory spec knocks value off, so be careful and stay OEM.

My E30 is probably worth less with the M-Tech 1 kit and M badge that in standard state.

So many times in the past I thought I was being clever and it cost me every time. Just a couple, Vespa SS 180, didn't like the three shades of Monza red after accident repair so painted it blue, halved the trade in when I bought my Lambretta X200. Same when I sold my Lambretta Vega in 1970, tuned up and panted metallic red but lost 30%.

It's also usually less hassle.
Everyone has the right to reach the level of their own incompetence.

Thanks guys, already managed to source a standard lip which hopefully I'll be able to keep an eye on the forums and ebay for a genuine iS, same as you!

Couldn't find a R134a sticker but to be fair, the A/C is in pretty decent condition now I've replaced the blown resistor.

Happy to meet up with anybody local too and chat cars and all that once this lockdown stuff is all over! Appreciate the warm welcome and support from you all and looking forward to contributing to this forum!

New iS lip is NLA afaik so I got a pattern one from Germany and had it colour coded. Let me know if you are unable to find an original one and I'll find the link for the one I went for.

Thanks

That would be great! I saw one recommended on here from DM Autoteile in Germany but if you've got good experience elsewhere?

My paint was pretty poorly done by myself, I rushed it, so it's with the paint shop now for the lip/mirrors/door trims and spoiler (again!)

Thanks

It looked good for about 2 months at which point the paint started to flake and peel off 8O hence off to the paint guy's to do it properly this time. Pretty sure the rattle cans I used had little to no hardener!

Quality wise I have no complaints about it, clips were good too. Will update some photos once it's out of paint and back on the car.

Thanks

It is however, it is also a kick in the teeth when they were doing them for £90 a couple of years ago.
