Is there any good reason for disconnecting the front fog lights? (slowly working through various issues with the car - this was done by a previous owner)

Does not look like the right connector end here?
It seems you have a pre-facelift connector on the loom, but you have a facelift fog light. Possibly the reason why it was not connected?
Otherwise maybe because the loom is faulty, causing short-circuit?

That probably explains it. It's a pre-facelift car which has had a Mtech2-style front spoiler added, so I guess the fog lights aren't original.

You can get the appropriate connectors at your dealership. Don't know if there is a price difference by country, but it was not so expensive for me (prefacelift car with facelift valance and fog lights).
You would need the following:
- 61130007442 x 4 (2 cables per fog light)
- 61131378402 x 2 (connects to the fog light, it is the receptacle for the cables).
Then some soldering and heat shrink tubing, and the job is then done in minutes. ;)
