Binoculars

Hi , Does anyone know what to look for when buying second hand binoculars ?
I bought a set of 10 x 50 and I am seeing double (refunded) but I would like some really powerful ones , you know so I can see into next week but without breaking the bank.
What does 10 and 50 mean , what should I be looking for when buying a strong set ??

10 is the magnification and 50 is the objective lens diameter. Bigger the diameter, the better the performance in low light.

For "bird" watching 10x40 or 10x42 should be fine, larger magnification means the image will be distorted when your hands shake....... Swarowski do nice optics.

Cheers Ben, my offer was declined so I bought some 20 x 180 x100 instead which should arrive soon I hope.
I still have my tripod from a few years ago so all ready to go, cheers for this
