Hello all - I’d just like to introduce myself as a new member. I have an E30 316i and I’d love to get it back to its best. I bought it a few years ago from a neighbour. Her father bought it from new and then gave it to her before he died. It’s been off the road for two years but I got it MOTd this week and it’s now back on the road! I have a few issues with it - drivers door lock doesn’t work, even though the central locking does. The heater works but makes a hell of a racket. They’re very simple things to repair, I think. I’d also like to get it re-sprayed at some point too. The car is completely original and I want to keep it that way too - but I will need guidance from sage minds, please. Thank you very much, Mousey from Herefordshire.

Hi and welcome. If your car is "completely original" and you want to keep it that way then think twice about a respray. You only get "original" once and a respray will compromise that and cost a fortune if it is done to a high standard.
I bought mine last year with full intension of having a respray because the paint was dull and miserable looking. I was lucky that my car was not rusty or rotten and so with some careful, patient detailing with a DA polishing machine the car came up looking great. Sure it has the odd scratch and dent, expected after 29 years, but I now see these marks as all part of the cars long history and for me a respray would spoil it. Now when I look at it I can't believe I considered a respray!

Obviously major rot, welding repairs and panel replacement can mean that a respray can't be avoided. Good luck with your car - it is great to get hold of a car where you know the history. Any pictures of yours?

Welcome!

Post up some pics and especially the areas of concern on the body.
The collective wisdom is strong here.

If you're not concerned about show standards, then these cars are fantastic when the mechanicals are sorted and they're 'well presented'.
i.e. 30+ years old, but tidy.
