Hey guys,
Finally got around to enquiring what the horrible scraping noise was coming from my rear disc. Turned out to be the backing plate had rusted through causing the small spring pin holding the handbrake down to wreak havoc on the disc. Photo
I was reading the E30 wiki about repairing the backing plate hole. Was wondering if anyone has any washers they would recommend to help keep the new pins in place?
Cheers

You can buy hold down washers on the bay of E... they're shaped dish and slotted just like the backplate..although a bit tricky to fit they do work.
Fitting new backplates is the best fix although it requires you to replace the rear bearings as you will trash them when removing the hubs.

Yeah Steve - I did that with mine too - then hacking through Holborn there was this horrible screeching and grinding noise from the rear - yup, the pin had come free - made a right bloody mess!

That's why I used the not/bolt/etc combo.
Driving down the road one day & the handbrake lever kept popping up & down.
Got back home (v.v.v.short distance) stripped it down to find the old pin & spring had come out the rescue washer & got jammed in the mech.
Rebuilt it all with new mech & adjuster & the m6 bolt/nut/washer & a new spring.
Been right ever since. I even kept that set up when I replaced the backing plates.

that's the ones i used the first time but after a while they can fail as well, also a right PITA to get in place if there's an abs sensor in the way.

Yea I’ve currently just got a temporary bolt and nylon nut, no spring though so trying to not use it. Is the spring just to allow for movement?

I recently went though this mate I’m I’m sure I put some pictures in one of my threads. There are two types. I needed the slightly larger one for the fitting kit I had but then had to reduce the O/D of the washer to make it fit properly on the backing plate if that makes sense.
