Oil filter woes

Did an oil change yesterday but when it came to changing the filter it wouldn't budge. In the end I gave up and just refilled the oil with the old filter in place. (Stupid) question is, how much oil will I lose if I replace the filter without first draining the new oil?

Next time you can't get the filter off just use the tried and tested pikey method....

Get large screwdriver and hammer, beat the screwdriver all the way through til it comes out the other side with said hammer, then proceed to wind out filter.

The pikey method did cross my mind but if that failed I would've been screwed. I've got the strap type filter removal tool which has always worked in the past but this time I couldn't stop it from slipping. Is the plier type a better option?

Place the strap right down at the bottom of the filter so you are at the most solid part of the assembly and put emery cloth on the inside of the strap the coarser the better.
Hand tight next time

I have to say that generally, even after hand tight application, filters on the m20 are an utter pain to get out, even using the pikey method ..there's little room to swing the screw driver, and I've had the filter can collapse rather than it unscrewing.. I guess it's the heat from the manifold that does it.

Basically a crap place to have fitted the filter if you ask me.

As well as a strap, I also have a bicycle-chain affair with small teeth on the inside that joins at a 1/2" socket so can be used at the end of a long extension. Not found one yet that didn't submit to that but the one on the 323 has been there for 20+ years so that will be the test.

x10 as you say,must be the heat, always hand-tighten them but always sods to take off.

i use a large set of pliers this kind of style, due to the angled head there is enough room fit them and still be able to rotate to work it off.
