London Ultra Low Emissions Zone

I've got an '89 E30 1.8i petrol. Apparently the standard pf liability for petrol vehicles in the emissions zone is Euro4. Does anyone know whether it is possible or worthwhile to bring these cars up to that standard and avoid the charge? I mean, without spending fortunes.

There has already been a thread on this.
The easiest way to make your car compliant is to convert it to run on LPG. My converted car is awarded the French 'CritAir 1', certificate, which is the cleanest classification possible, short of things like pure electric vehicles, but according to those on here who have looked into it, this view isn't shared by the London authorities.
In short, you will be driving one of the lowest polluting vehicles on the road, but the authorities in London won't recognise this.

I've seen it written in the editorials of a monthly free magazine on two occasions that LPG conversions will get you into the London emissions zones, but others on here disagreed.
I have no interest in ever driving inside that great circular car park that surrounds London, and I only ever drive on part of that to get to Dover, so I've never checked further.

That prob wouldn't work for me anyway as need the bootspace for tools (personal/work vehicle) so if a few tweaks can't get me under the bar it'll prob be time to move to a (newer) petrol van. Shame. I do love the car.

LPG doesn't necessarily take up any boot space (although in an E34 I once bought it took up nearly ALL the boot space). I ran an E30 saloon followed by a touring for 20 years as a work vehicle filled with tools and goods, and both were fitted with toroidal tanks which fitted entirely into the spare wheel well.

Oh really.. wow that would work although as you say i'll have to see for sure whether it gets me exemption or not.
