Another thing I would like to know...

I'd like to have a front interior light, in the blank panel where a manual roof winder would be, (rather than a maplight mirror!).

a) Is the wiring already up there somewhere to facilitate this? (1990 325 touring)
b) Was there a factory option for this?
c) Has anyone done this and used anything OEM ish?

a) No, but a home made loom can easily be fished over the top of the roof lining from one of the lights on the side.
b) No.
c) Done it to several E30s. I've used E36 , E39 and E34 lights, some with built in maplights. I've also used a Vauxhall interior light, which was unswitched, just wiring it in parallel with the driver's side existing light. These Vauxhall lights are very similar to an E30 boot light.

I presume your referring to the access panel over an electric sunroof motor. There's not a lot of clearance behind the panel, and with some lights you might need to put a spacer in to push the roof lining down a small amount.

Thanks Brian, just wish I'd thought of it before I had the headlining re-trimmed!

There's no problem in getting it over the top of the lining. There's no exposed part of the sunroof mech. that it can get caught in either.
