Started the car today and it would not idle, or build speed smoothly, it would run at a higher speed with the throttle open, but not idle. As it got warmer it would idle slower than normal and unsteadily. I opened the bonnet and there was mighty noise of rushing air, as though there was some leak on the inlet side. Then it suddenly cleared and behaved as it should. Is there some type of valve that had stuck and suddenly become free? I have never had to do anything with that side of the engine, and only being used to carburettor cars, I am at a complete loss looking at various unknown components!

Could the ICV have siezed shut?

Take it out and clean with carb cleaner, make sure its free - twist it rapidly in your hand and it should clunk as the vane opens and shuts.

Check you have buzzing from the ICV when the ignition is first turned on.

Thanks Paul, once I found out what the ICV was, it certainly sounds as though that might be the problem, so I'll give it a clean and hope that sorts it.

I had a go at that, it now rattles much better and I have not had any further problem, so I hope that has sorted it. Thanks again Paul!
