Unfortunately my jack is shot, as the rust has bonded the springs together.
I would only want a jack in the event of a puncture road side. At home have a trolley jack.
But rather than try and source an original, will any jack do?

i'll be honest i dont trust scissor jacks at all,

i'ce got a 2.5 tonne trolley jack with a carry case i keep in the boot,

got it from here

https://www.sgs-engineering.com/garage-equipment

& it's never let me down yet.
if it's got t*ts or wheels it's bound to be trouble...............prove me wrong.

I usually take a 1.5 Tonne bottle jack and a block of wood if I know I am going on a long trip.

Very very interesting! Glad I read this, had no idea you could get trolley jack/axle stand combos so cheap. Thanks!

Probably get a welder from here too :D

Yeah, I'm swaying towards bottle jack, seems more compact in the boot than maybe the trolley jack.

No worries,
From (painfull) personal experience I prefer the trolley jack.

Might take up more room (alongside my tool box) but is a better bet from a safety point of view.

Wouldn't an original oem be worth finding... there are a couple of new ones available as well as S/H

Exactly! Not all E30s have had their jacks submerged in a boot pocket full of water for years. Good ones are out there.

A good good point gent's...
Now the boot is watertight, it might be worth an OEM one.
Saw some on eBay for nearly the same price as a new trolley jack....and having two children under 4, I need boot space!

The original jack is an utter abomination. There must be a slew of M3 owners who have punched through their sill covers when trying to use the original jack. I have tried dozens of times to figure out how it works safely on an M3, and on anything other than perfectly flat, smooth ground it doesn't. I now have a Sealey scissor jack in the boot, which is safer and kinder to the car.

Its a bugger as you jack the car up and haven't got the angle right it then starts to move backwards.

Stowed alongside the jack in an E30, you'll find a wheel chock, whose sole purpose is to prevent the above.

And if it is missing, Halfords sell one for £8.

Beware the Tech 2 sport jack is different from non body kit models for a very good reason.

Is it totally different, from a non body kit model and could you tell the difference between them?

This is the sport jack with the centre spine removed to avoid the body kit.
