Hello
hopefully Sunday afternoon I'm looking at replacing the the throttle cable.
How tight should it be? Loose or tight?
Any guidance Appreciated

Woke up with a hangover after watching BVB beat Wolfsburg yesterday....so..
The cable should be adjusted so that at rest there is about 2-3 mm of play at the knurled plastic adjustment end. This makes sure that the TPS is activated for throttle closed and the butterfly is on its end stop, thus providing perfect conditions for correct idling.
The end stop and cable should never be intentionally or unintentionally set up to control tick over.
Paul

All done.
The hardest bit is knocking out the plastic section, through the bulk head as limited room for movement.
There's also a tiny rubber grommet which fits on the hook section of cable, at the pedal side. That is also fiddley.
This little rubber grommet did not come with the replacement cable though.
Also at the throttle end, the plastic clip the cable sits on, there's two places the cable can sit on. I used the side the original cable was sat in, but asking if there's another reason?

I think the other is for the cruise control cable - but I could be well wrong!

+1 Agreed
However cruise control I believe was quite a rare spec and I've yet to personally come across and E30 equipped with Cruise Control

Nice one gents
Cruise control seems like another thing to go wrong and be a pain to fix!

I use French autoroutes reasonably often so thought cruise control would be useful, and managed to find someone who had the kit taken off a scrapper but never fitted it. DanThe fitted it for me when doing some other work, and I can confirm it has a cable from the actuator, that sits above the N/S wing near the AFM, to the throttle body, using the other location to the throttle cable. I think it was almost standard on US spec cars and although somewhat crude compared to a modern set-up it does all the basic functions very effectively, and <touching wood> has not gone wrong!

There's also the wide open throttle position to consider. There's an adjustable stop under the pedal that needs checking after the throttle cable slack at idle has been set.
The pedal stop should be adjusted so that the throttle butterfly is just fully open, without putting the linkage on the throttle body under stress.

Ahh, I see. So this needs adjusting at the pedal end to stop putting the throttle under stress when the accelerator pedal is pushed down hard on the floor?

That's correct. Obviously you want the throttle butterfly to open fully, but not to put a strain on everything when the pedal's to the floor.

Thank you!
I would have never of taken this into consideration!

Alternatively, of course, the pedal stop may be adjusted too high already, limiting the throttle opening. Setting it properly could be the cheapest power gains you could ever get.

Adjusted and found the pedal bolt was wound straight to the floor. Adjusted so the pedal was resting on the bolt at full throttle.
Probably why the cable was zip tied on at the throttle arm end!
