Can be very nasty... there's a suppressor resistor in the cable just before the spark plug connector which burn out and damage the cable... I had a misfire at 3k to 4k revs which was random caused by such a failure.

If the lead is connected to a spark plug the voltage will be limited to a maximum of about 2000 volts, but if it's disconnected, it'll be 20,000 volts +, probably even 30,000.
Either will hurt.
30,000 volts will jump about 10mm in air, if from a rounded surface, or about 20mm from a sharp point.
