The Time has come.

The day of reckoning is upon us.

It is finally time for me to deal with this horrible under bonnet situation.

IMG_1902.JPG

A few months back I scraped all the disintegrated insulation off the bonnet, and removed all the bits that accumulated in the engine bay and now I need to get rid of the last remnants of glue from under the bonnet.

I'm sure theres plenty of zoners out there who have been through this one before!

Sooooo:

A) Whats the best way to get rid of this crap? I want to get rid of it all before applying any new adhesive. :?:

B) Whats the best way to glue new insulation on without it detaching itself. :?:

You really don't need to remove all the old glue residue. As it is now you can fit the new insulation and it will stick nicely. New insulation comes with an adhesive back so no need to use any glue. When I replaced mine I got to the stage you are at now and put the new pieces on and 10 + years later it's all still in place.

Oh really Cloggy Saint?Great name BTW!

That certainly sounds like good news to me! I didn't know that the insulation was already backed with adhesive, I was expecting to have to apply it again myself and was worried about it not playing ball with whats already on there after a while...10 years plus is good with me! I think I would have just qbout regained my sanity enough by then to do it all again! The stuff in the engine bay was horrid, black sticky dust.. EVERYWHERE!

I am tempted to try and get rid of it though, so am open to any suggestions...other than setting it alight!

I think some die-hards recommend brake cleaner to get all the residue off. It's your time!

Same with the white spirit (much cheaper than brake cleaner) Easier to remove bonnet an lie it down glue side up. Leave the white spirit about 5 mins to really soften the glue then use a kitchen towel or cloth and it will wipe off easily.

I took the bonnet off - on the floor on top of some rugs - then used petrol and a scraper - quite quick but messy - you need a lot of kitchen roll too!

Same!

Was wondering if the stuff on ebay is any good - £50 with postage?
Or are people getting this from BMW?

Cotswold is the place to go. Same price as ebay - poss cheaper sometimes - original parts and a great service. I don't work for Cotswold but I do recommend.

Cheer's Mart!

Gotta say it was actually relatively easy with the white spirit, just let it sit for a minute and soak in then scrrraaaaaape that muck off!Finish with some big wipes....works a treat.

I've also been looking at this on my car and I'm not fitting new foam, I'd prefer the painted look inside the bonnet personally.
Going to try the white spirit method tommorow hopefully it looks good underneath

I would suggest fitting new foam, your car will sound better and it will stop the risk of cooking the paint on your bonnet....
