hi: guys

i bought a shitty air cone filter off e-bay a couple of weeks ago only cause it was blue and cheap 6quid brand new.......its called a JR filter

after lying in my boot for a few days i was stoned and bored and decided to put it on.....however after putting it on.....i started my car up and revved it up i noticed its a bit louder and i can hear the engine sucking the air in!..........when i now floor it in 2nd or 3rd after 3.500 revs it roars and rasps but a get a little feelin that my car responds quicker!.....but wat worries me is the rasping and roaring when you floor it......is this normal or hav i fucked summat up????

each time i start the car and rev it up the sucking noise is worrying me

is it normal?

One of the main reasons people buy these filters is for the induction noise they create. If it sounds good, enjoy it! Its nothing to worry about
If it aint broke, it aint modified enough

JR ones are OK, comared to chinese brands I see around. I use one scince I have my E30 because of the little space it takes and because it leaves room for the my LPG components. No HP, just noise and more space in the loom. Another thing: try to put something to stop the hot air your generator is blowing on it.

I can't remember where but I once read a really good tech article on the benefits/disadvantages of diferent types of air filter element:

Basically the std paper filters flow equally as well as performance filters but only when they are in tip top condition. They also offer the best particlate filtration by far. Trouble is they clog a lot faster because of it.

The best sollution seems to be fiddle with the air box so you have a nice large cold air feed and change the filter twice as often as you would normally. This way you dont get any extra noise and the best filtration, plus cold air is worth a few bhp...

Personally, I hate people in front of me knowing my car is quick, just the poeple behind me!

Jai

PS I'm a hypocrite, my car has a 'green' cylindrical filter element. It barks and sounds nice but I curse the bugger everytime I put my foot down and people turn around!
