I am thinking of importing a cruise control kit from USA from a forum member. Any one who has done this before remember how much customs and vat duty they had to pay?

I bought two of them a few years back, and I don't remember paying anything extra.

Customs & excise are more strict these days I think. I remember years ago getting stuff from USA and not paying anything sometimes costing nearly 1k. Recently I have had to pay.

Looked on the link above and looks like 2.5% on the total cost plus vat at 20%. I think if it is Royal Mail as the carrier then levy a clearance charge.

If Royal mail are the carrier UK side they you will have to pay a "handling fee" before you can get your goods.

There's no real way round it.

It’s a grey area, as in it 100% isn’t, pay your tax! :P

If it’s sent as a gift, no invoice, and the sender declares the value under I.e. $50. A customs officer may open the package to assess its worth. A used cruise control kit will look like a box of old tatt to most. You could pay nothing, as Brian said.

I’ve only ever paid once but that was for a set of Mag wheels that I asked not to be sent as a gift. Big, round and shiny, wouldn’t take Sherlock Holmes to realise somebody was playing games. Import & tax was enough to make me sit up and take notice. 23% iirc.
The Internet - It has proven to be worthless, and is nothing but a repository for perverts.

Is it from Richard? When I buy stuff he marks the value down to below the threshold. Never been done yet! Touch wood!

As the post above, can be marked up as return etc etc to get around the "rules and regs"
