Spotted this for sale ad on a local cruise site....
BMW 316
J PLATED
OLD SHAPE
4 DOOR
MOT TILL 10TH NOVEMBER 2006
TAX TILL JUNE 2006
15" ALLOYS
CD PLAYER
ELECTRIC WING MIRRORS
CENTRAL LOCKING
JUST HAD SERVICE
This is a tidy old car which only needs a polish ( colour magic included in sale ). Th car has, as with all old bmws had the back arches touched up and the normal wear to the base pads on the front seats. Excluding these faults the car is fine.
Now the best bit the price he is looking for Ԛ£300 cash for a quick sale, just come with the cash and drive it away.

Chrome bumpered model... on a J plate?
Is it a bit dodgy? or just a late late registered car?

As you said really...could be dodgy, could be a genuinely late registered car, though the thing with cars registered late are usually special models, or last of run cars that hang around for a while.
Only definite way of finding out for definte is as usual ring the dealer!

Yes that is very wrong , its a 316 carb last made in 87 E as a chrome bumper and 89 as a plastic bumper. What sort of deviant rings a chrome 316 4 door ?.

yeah but if the RAC check is bringing up the correct year of manufacture then its prob just an import or late registered car.

You can't put a plate with a newer prefix than the cars registered prefix though.

that m3 is a shell that was never registered, that's why...
it could be on a j plate by accident, did you know if the dvla makes that mistake, you're under no obligation to swap it for a proper plate - it's perfectly fine for you to keep it.

I thought that 'R' reg E30 M3 was owned by BMW to compare the new E36 with the old M3 and There kept it until about 1996.....then the bloke that bought didnt reg it until 1998

if you can build a car using brand new bits, then sva test it and when you pass you will get a new registration, some guy built an escort cossie like that and they put it on an new x reg!! i think you could only have 1 second hand or recondition part eg engine, and show recipts to prove it. oh and you have to meet current emissions
the car could knocking around bracknell for a few years and have been registered late and just given away so to speak.

The M3 on an R plate is unusual but does'nt surprise me too much. I have worked for two manufacturers in the past and this did happen from time to time on expensive models (where they were either sat in a compound or dealership for years and kept). I really can't see why the 316 would have been late registered though - the selling dealer would have received no income from the car (and been paying holding fees) for at least five years - this would have been more than the car was worth!

The answer is actually rather simple. The number plate's three letters contain 'LS' which means it was registered in the Falkirk area of Scotland where I believe they still eat children and where marrying your brother or sister (often both) is permitted by law.
The only reason the 316 chrome bumpered shitter is on a J plate is because the local Selkirk BMW dealer ran out of E21's in 1990. In Scotland, the E36 was only announced as a new car in 2005.
