Hi needed some advice on some ignition troubles. Got a 318i 1991. Just recently the car has become hard to start the key turns fine and releases the steering lock no problems. However it won't start unless the key is turned as far as it will go and held with some force. I am thinking the ignition barrel or switch have worn out? What might be the problem and is it a simple fix? Thanks in advance.

It will be wear in the plastic switch clipped to the back of the ignition/lock barrel. Metal blade on the back of the barrel engages with a plastic slot in the switch. Metal blade wins.

Exactly what happened to mine, easy to replace it as the switch simply clips on the back of the barrel.

I have a RHD car from the UK in the states, and I need to replace the ignition switch.
Does anyone have experience on whether it's the same switch as all other e30s?
My mechanic says it needs to be ordered from a dealer in the UK.

Speak to Cotswolds on here and see what options they come up with as the replacement barrel is ordered against the V5 Vin number I believe.

You could just remove it and start the car with a spoon.......
