i have two m42 engines here and one has only done 52k miles
that's good enough reason for me .

that was the original plan ... no wait that was to fragg it , then it was fix it up and sell it ... now it's had loads of love and attention i might keep it .... i want to at least put a few miles on the finished job and dial it in as there is always fine tuning .

instead of selling i might swap for something boosted to blow up haha .

or boost this m42 ...

had a few hours on the engine today and sorted out the cop conversion after the plate turned up with no fixings and doesn't sit flush so i had to splash out £3 on some diy fixings from the nut and bolt shop just up the road got all the allen key head bolts to fix the coils to the plate as well so that's one job out of the way .... mocked it up on the e36 rocker cover , the e30 cover is painted now .

£3 the cheapest parts i've ever bought

happy with that i painted the e30 rocker cover i had prepared earlier .....



the inlet is painted and finished , rocker cover needs the fins sanded back to alloy so no pics until those are both finished ...

moved on to the gearbox that's now nice and shiny ready to fit as soon as the donk comes off the engine stand ....



it might even move under it's own steam this year

turns out i needed a couple of bits still like an m42 specific p/s pulley wheel and a rear gear selector bush .
i bought a good used correct pulley wheel which arrived yesterday along with the rear selector bushing. i
had to buy a poly one from the states which wouldn't fit over the selector barbs at rear of shaft and even if i ground the barbs off it looks to be about 1mm to big and will have a bit of slop .

i had a look through a couple of tubs full of " i might need this one day parts " and hit the jackpot



these little f00kas are about £55 from BMW ! just needs a clean up .



i fitted the bungs i'd ordered for the throttle body delete one for the plastic pipe and one for the head stub , nice and tidy job better than a cut hose with a bolt shoved in lol .....



got the inlet manifold and rocker cover fitted , next job to plumb in the oil breather pipe to the throttle body stub and the icv to the intake boot , no problems and done a nice tidy job .





my spigot bearing arrived so got the engine off the stand , fitted the bearing ...



had this as new sachs clutch on the shelf ready to go



now it's all bolted together and ready to fit .... i hope the e36 m42 engine mounts work after a slight modification .







i got a bit excited and fitted the fogs to the freshly painted valance

The M42 in an E30 is a wonderful thing, perfectly balanced for pressing on, especially around the twisty stuff.

was a straight fit i just threw the e36 knock sensors in the bin as no plugs for them but had to change the alternator and it's mount , the p/s pump and pulley , the trigger wheel and pulleys , and the water pump pulley .... all pulleys need to be from a 318is e30 . m40 won't fit .

well after paint match attempt no 2 ..... i think that's about as close as i'm gonna get , and not too shabby




and the e36 engine mounts worked a treat with the locating tabs ground off ...... finaly it's in !



coasting along happily until the wrong oil filter turns up !


just need to remove the diff from a 318i m10 turd i've got that should have a 3.91 small case fitted ... i'm not gonna fit a 4.10 as i want some slightly longer legs in 5th gear .

well there is bit more left to do than just fit the diff but it's closer to being finished .

e30 ecu .... i had a full e30 m42 with unknown miles and put everything needed from that onto the low miler e36 m42 i bought from Andyboy on here , [ Andrew Everette ].

I've got an E36 M42 here from a rusty SA 318is, that I'm going to use for a E30 transplant, once I find a suitably solid car to stick it in...

i'll fit the diff put a prop on, exhaust and bleed clutch next week , well basically get it all finished bar the paint on wings/bonnet .

happy it starts though now i can move on

i found a really nice passenger seat in my loft so converted it the the drivers seat by swapping the seat runners and hardware over from a drivers seat .

gave it a good clean and.......... well happy with that

all the mechanical work appears to be done now apart from adjust the coil overs up to a sensible ride height , i had to take all the inlet manifold back off and change the temp sensor as i'd left the e36 one in which has two pins and swap it for an e30 one. now my temp gauge works
also had to take the zaust manifold off and have a weld done as the usual m42 blow from cylinder 1 was in effect but that's all sorted after fiddly shit job getting at all the bolts , glad it's a 4-pot .





really close for an mot now and a shakedown and then probably some mechanical tweeks if needed .

some lucky new owner just paid a deposit and secured it

damn it's the 2nd longest car i've owned , only drove it home 2yrs ago then round the block last week . i'm booking it's mot 25 mile away though haha ... i will get to drive it

well the saga continues , the buyer pulled out yesterday as he's found another car he has to buy [ originally looking for a 2dr ] , no big deal to me although i am now £200 better off.
Aaand another buyer wanting to view/purchase it mid sept .

the final bits of work on the car are planned for tomorrow, the bonnet is now painted so the wings and bonnet are being fitted then flattened and polished then it's ready for mot

hopefully a few pics of a complete car tomorrow .
