The lancaster
Moderator: martauto
There has been an event for the second world war about 3 miles from me this weekend and they arranged a flypass for the beautiful Lancaster for Saturday and today and it flew literally over my house both days and soooooooooooooo bloody low as well. It scared the hell out of the cat and our lass ran back inside yesterday.
What a magnificent sight, the Lancaster was shame my phone was 3 hours away(just upstairs) .
Mart.

Four Merlins, no wonder the cat ran away!
Two headblenders, couple of bags of MC Hammer, 5 litres of FFF, a 48ft bastard, a box of jumped-up custard and some soggy chimps
What a sight and sound this was !!!!BEERBOY123 wrote:Four Merlins, no wonder the cat ran away!
They were so low I knew the bloke "driving" her.
Just imagine when they sent over 1000 on a raid ?
It really must have been too much for a lot of people just to hear all of that.

mart, it really is a fantastic sight to see her flying, i've seen it a few times & been round the hangar they keep her in at RAF conningsby, it's in there with a Dakota, spitfire, hurricane, IIRC vulcan & a few others.
if you get a chance then go to east kirkby in lincolnshire, they have a lancaster there, it's does "taxi" runs & if you think it makes a racket going over head you want to be stood 15 - 20ft behind/near it when they do the taxi runs, as they take it up to full take off power & you can see it just wants to go so much the back end keeps bouncing, & the force of the engines feels like it's going to blow you over & you can feel it in your chest,
for a fee, you can get the VIP tour, a ride in the lanc on a taxi tun, & a full meal in the officers mess plus other bits.
the name of an old boss of mine is on the service roster for the city of lincoln lanc (lucky git he is)here's the place i'm on about
https://www.lincsaviation.co.uk/
also, i've got an oil pressure/temp gauge from a crashed lanc i'm thinking of putting in my e30 inplace of the OBC.

The 1000 bomber raid was mainly propaganda and most of the planes where twin engined and not 4 as it was a transitional period from light bombers to heavy bombers in 1942. I think there where less then a 100 Lancaster's available at that timemartauto wrote:What a sight and sound this was !!!!BEERBOY123 wrote:Four Merlins, no wonder the cat ran away!

I think my Uncle was on one of the raids over Cologne or Essen piloting his Wellington.
My Mum also served in the same squadron from 1944.

I did the taxi run a few years back and loved it. Just going along for a museum visit when they are doing this is recommend. As said, you can stand right in front and around the Lanc as they run all 4 Merlins up to around 1800rpm ( pretty much cruising throttle ) and be 20 feet away - most exhilarating !
When doing the taxi run, you stay in a fixed position within the aircraft ( I was in the bomb aimers position ) decided upon on the day. The guide asks if anyone in the group has a connection with bombers, and offers the same position for relatives . In our group there was a guy who had a grandad who was a rear gunner on Lancs, and it was a nice touch to see him seated there.
After he run you all get to swap positions, and it was quite humbling to be sat in that rear turret and feel so exposed, imagining a hail of fire coming from a night fighter out of the dark.
The museum is very small, but if you are in the area , its well worth going along on a taxi day and watching. They have a number of days all summer long to visit .

BMG, they've added a lot more to the museum now, far more displays, technical info & a lot more,
as you say though it's definitely wortha visit.
if you go into the village & up to the area between high barn & the church there's a field where a spitfire overshot the runway & crashed landed & the remains are still there as they pilot died in the crash so it was left as a grave of sorts,
also up in the wolds there's loads of disused runways dotted around,
there's another place round there up near Louth thats worth a visit, RAF stenigot it was part of chain home radar, there's the old radar dishes & the radar/radio tower, also there's RAF wickenby near market raisin a WW1 airfield.
forgot to add the there's also the bomber command memorial at cannick hill just outside lincoln.
loads of history round the county to do with the RAF.

Not quite we had the less know short sterling - the first 4 engined heavy bomber in RAF service, and also the Handey Page Halifax which was a better plane than the sterling , but no lancaster.Satan wrote:The 1000 bomber raid was mainly propaganda and most of the planes where twin engined and not 4 as it was a transitional period from light bombers to heavy bombers in 1942. Lancaster was an evolution from its original design the manchester which was a twin engined version a sound design with shit engines. Love it all!

Only 88 flew it wasn't the best of planes as the maximum bomb capacity cut its range short so had to fly with a lighter load.Simon13 wrote:Not quite we had the less know short sterling - the first 4 engined heavy bomber in RAF service, and also the Handey Page Halifax which was a better plane than the sterling , but no lancaster.Satan wrote:The 1000 bomber raid was mainly propaganda and most of the planes where twin engined and not 4 as it was a transitional period from light bombers to heavy bombers in 1942. Will try and visit again soon. Maybe combine it with a taxy run day, and then a visit the to BBMF , since they are just few miles from each other.steve_k wrote:BMG, they've added a lot more to the museum now, far more displays, technical info & a lot more,

Sort of related, took my boy to the local steam rally at the weekend and they had tractor pulling on. Listening to a tractor with an unsilenced Merlin engine running on alcohol at full tilt is quite something, though they struggled to run due to the hot weather and alcohol, but 2 of the 4 did.

X5 V8 for thrills, CRV for chills, Range Rover P38 V8 for sooooo much aggravation...

I am lucky enough to live less than an hour away from both East Kirkby and Coningsby with some great roads inbetween. East Kirkby do a good wings and wheels event with a great range of cars from classic to super cars with the Lancaster runs and Spitfire flying display with an ME109. When the Canadian Lancaster visited there was 3 Lancasters in the same view, two flying and one taxeying. That stood the hairs up, amazing.
