I was always going to throw out my old bulls eyes as they were so shot, but after a lot of work I finally bonded the lens' back on today. The white pinstripes had long gone, so I polished out the remnants - I reckon these now look pretty good, they both took about 4 hours to cut back and polish - get the glass too hot and they crack, so it's slow work.

It's really satisfying to restore old stuff to almost "as new" - considering a Bosch lens unit for a bulls-eye is 110 euro new.

I'm building a second set, HID equipped, when all cleaned up the light pattern and output is really good.

I might offer this as a service - on an exchange basis - The main beams (Hella) are pretty cheap new, so maybe not worth the effort - but the Bosch Bulls Eyes are easy to strip and replace the front lens part - small for shipping too, and they are about 110 euro each new - and I think are worth preserving.

Takes about 4 hours each lens, then finish with Hydrophobic polish - would have to be 45 euros each I reckon.

Anyway - if there's a level of interest - I'll get some stock together..

What purpose do those white pin stripes have btw?
Nice looking result!

Don't think they do anything - just have that "racing" look - most old lamps I've seen, the stripes have fallen off 'cos of the heat - and most after market lamps don't have then either.

Here's a quick update:

I finished my HID lamp set.

Here's a set in progress, the dipped beam has been ground but not polished and the main beam is as it came.

Here's the finished pair:

and here's the rear of the main beam after rust treatmant and repaint:

The plastic frames ( Hella) were 'orrible, but after cleaning up and finishing with boiled linseed oil, they look quite OK.

The lamps still retain one or two tiny marks from deep chips in the lens' but they look really great - I'll post a shot when they are back on the car.

Really want to do this to my lenses, but being genuine smoked Hella's I'm too scared to risk damaging them further.

would be interested in getting mine overhauled - have you a price in mind for a set?

I'm not sure I'd want to tackle smoked Hella's that did not belong to me -

As I said up the thread, I'd be looking for €45 for each lamp - if you are interested, I need to know Hella or Bosch or a mix - it's easy to remove the front lens/ reflector section of the smileys for shipping. Also I'd like a snapshot of each set just to confirm the condition/lens type.

Would it suit you to receive an exchange set? this would mean less time without any headlamps.

Also, I can re paint the back of the main beams which usually get pretty rotten - extra 10 euro's.

Downside, I'm in Germany - so shipping is a bit more expensive...

Anyhow, if anyone wants to talk about this further, send me a pm.
