Good new year to you all . thought i will share this , bit of an experiment too.
check out youtube link above , it worked to hold the water pump pulley tight enough to remove said fan.
this is what a new fan should do ,
.
car running cooler now, steady just below half way 0n temp gauge.
well happy bunny.
changed viscous fan clutch, ratchet strap

yes. but just as well to check on the new part. put a watch makers screwdriver in threads and turn the big nut.
Yeah, from front of car looking at engine turn clockwise to undo, I believe they all are. seems a bit weird.
you also need a 32 mm spanner.

They would unscrew and fall off when you blipped the throttle if they weren't.
Good idea with the strap!
My personal solution is to use the standard adjuster on the alternator to temporarily over tighten the belt, and if all else fails, a 6" x 1" piece of flat steel, with a 6mm hole close to one corner, can be bolted to the fan pulley, using a 6mm bolt slightly longer than the original. If you don't use a longer bolt, you will likely strip the thread in the pump flange.
On later engines, with a long flat belt (M5x), you can hook an old belt over the alternator pulley, then run the rest of the belt around the pump pulley a couple of turns or so, until it pulls tight.

There is tool available quite cheap that clips on to the fan pulley bolts to hold it steady whilst unbolting the 32mm nut.

They are about £10 on ebay but I dont think they would work on a tight fan, I rarely have trouble removing the fans TBH even when an idiot has been messing and put threadlock on them, worst one I had to drill a piece of 5mm flat bar in the end like Brian said

May not be the best but worth a try for the price.

Thanks, that looks good.
I've always managed with a spanner and tap with a hammer, but I suspect that some need a bit more persuasion.
