Hi members, anybody replaced the under Bonnet felt on their E30? Have removed all the old felt and have bought the proper stuff from BMW. However whilst the new felt has a tacky backing not sure if I need some more glue on the metal panel and if so which one. Anybody done this and very grateful for your help. Thanks guys and girls.

I have just replaced mine a couple of weeks ago. You don’t need any extra glue as the bmw one is quite strong. Just make sure you get it right in the first place as once stuck it won’t shift. I just made sure that the under bonnet was really clean by taking off the old foam and glue.
The BMW dealer advised me to use tar remover to take off old glue but I found the best way was to brush liberally white spirit on the residue and leave it for a while and then use a plastic spatula to scrape off and when it is nearly clean use panel wipe or methylated spirit to clean it off. I would also recommend that you put some large cardboard on top of the engine to stop any residue falling on the engine as the old stuff when it falls off and dries out will stick firmly.

That is really helpful and much appreciated. I have taken most if not all of the old stuff off with a copious dose of plastic spatula and some Halfords glue remover but will do as you say as a belt and braces. Thanks again. Good to know that the BM stuff does what it is supposed to do.

I think BSS325i recommended some brake cleaner from Toyota or something like that.

I found brake cleaner not much good as it was hard going plus working inside the garage I found the fumes were making me feel a bit rough.Satan wrote:I think BSS325i recommended some brake cleaner from Toyota or something like that.

Soak a rag with petrol and that removes it but wear gloves and follow the safety of good ventilation outside preferably when you do this

As far as I know you can only get one from the main dealer. I think it was about £35

Use white spirit, the old glue just falls off.
