Alternator Voltage Regulator

Having issues with my alternator...

So am going to replace the voltage regulator as a first step...

Is it necessary for me to remove the alternator to do this?

Bosch one it's easy as pie-alternator stays where it is,regulator is held on with 2 screws on the rear face.
my car has a Valeo replacement tho' and i believe these ones are a mite harder.

Thanks again to the zone for saving me a wad of cash...

Initially got told I would need to replace my alternator.

Searched the zone archives and as per a Mr Moore post looked at replacing the voltage regulator

BMW quote for a new alternator = +-£600

BMW quote for a new regulator = +-£130

Purchased a Beru regulator from Germany for £32 incl delivery

Half an hour later job done!

Most problems are just worn out carbon brushes on the regulator, and you can usually see evidence of slight arcing on the end of the shortest one.
If you pull the brushes gently, to straighten out the copper braid retaining the brush, and then refit the regulator, it will a) confirm that the brush was the problem, and b) give you at least a couple of months to source a new regulator.
