What is the best primer for bare metal?
Red oxide or the zinc?

Neither, Acid etch or you could use Epoxy, that’s also suitable for bare metal.

Basically anything you do will be an improvement!!!
The way I did mine was
1.. complete weld and grind to suitable finish.
2..treat welded area with kurust.
3..clean area thoroughly (I used isopropylalchohol).
4..prime area (both sides if possible).
5..seam seal weld lines try to copy factory finish!!
6..topcoat paint/underseal applied as applicable.
Good luck,other tips include weldable primer to prevent flash rusting etc.
I.m not an expert just tried to do mine methodically and hope it lasts!
