Hi all, can anyone advise on the source of this mechanical 'growl' noise which happens when I disengage the clutch in either first gear or reverse? No noises when the clutch is fully out and the car is idling. Depress clutch fully no noises. But around the time the clutch starts to bite I get the noise. Doesn't happen when shifting up or down through the gears (manual box). It sounds horrendous and I want to sort ASAP in case it leads to something serious! M40 engine (318i). Click on the link - should hopefully play a video where you can hear the noise (sorry you'll need volume up or headphones):
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

most likely to be the throw-out bearing that pushes against the fingers of the clutch pressure plate.
