So any of you guys following my track build will know I've been rewiring the car and relocating the fusebox. Yesterday I tested my work and all seems well, except for the indicators.
When operating off the stalk, all indicators work correctly and at the correct speed, EXCEPT the side indicators in the front wings. These don't work at all.
When operating off the hazard light switch, ONLY the side indicators in the front wings work, and they flash quickly as if a bulb's out.
I've had a good look at the wiring diagram and can't see anything that I could've done that would give rise to these symptoms? Any help would be most appreciated, thanks!
Odd Indicator Issue after Rewire

Short answer is that you've wired in incorrectly - probably around the hazard switch. All LH indicators and tell tale are wired directly together, and similarly for the RH equivalents, so what you describe should be impossible.
Correct wiring diagram: http://www.autolib.diakom.ru/CAR/BMW/19 ... /fig07.pdf , although it doesn't show the side repeaters.
Do the instrument cluster tell tales work with the stalk or the hazard switch?

Thanks for the reply Brian. Yeah thinking about it again, the blue/red and blue/black wires from the hazard light switch (on the dash loom) need to be spliced into the same colour wires from the indicator stalk on the body loom. I think I might not have done that... which would make sense as the side indicators plug into the dash loom

That sounds about right. The connection from the dash loom to the body loom, for the blue/red and blue/black (no red/black), was originally at the multi pin plug and socket beside the accessories socket
Just to close the query for anyone elses benefit, the above is correct. Tested today - connect blue/red and blue/black indicator wires in dash loom to their equivalents in the body loom and everything works properly.
I have another issue with the handbrake light not going out when the lever is released and it's deffo not the switch on the lever. But I'm working it...

Circuits don't come much more simple than this one. Just a single wire.Motorhole wrote: I have another issue with the handbrake light not going out when the lever is released and it's deffo not the switch on the lever. But I'm working it...
Earth the wire and the light is on. Leave it floating, and the light is off.
Yeah the problem is it's finding a resistive path to ground (about 30 ohms iirc) somewhere else. Even with the wire to the handbrake switch disconnected, there's obviously enough current through this path to keep the light illuminated.Brianmoooore wrote: Circuits don't come much more simple than this one. I've disconnected every ground point on the car (inner front wing, behind glovebox, indicators, rear bench, engine grounds and front right turret) and that 30 ohm path remains (between end of handbrake wire when disconnected and the chassis).
Goes away when the instrument cluster is unplugged. But I've bench tested that now and powered up etc off the car, it works fine and all cross-pin tests don't throw up anything unexpected
Shame! Rebuilt engine is in and running and I thought I was well on the home straight! Now I'm pulling pieces apart again left right and centre.

It's the blue/grey wire on pin 1 of the white plug on the instrument cluster that goes to the handbrake switch. Should be fairly simple to follow it along its path.
A 30 ohm path suggests something like a small bulb, so one thing you could try, at your own risk, is to connect a 6 or 9 volt battery between the wire and earth, with the cluster unplugged, and see if anything gives itself away.

Right, so I spent some time with this again today. After a spare cluster showed up the same behaviour (confirming the cluster was likely not at fault) I set about trying to track down the rogue ground and managed to figure out it was through the C101. Unplugged C101, issue went away. Started testing C101 pins. Continuity between charge and oil pressure switch pins to handbrake light wire was the same as for ground to handbrake light wire. Bit disconnecting both of these didn't fix the issue like disconnecting the C101. Tracked it to the unloader relay (black/green wire). Disconnect this from the unloader relay, problem goes away. So I expect I've wired in the unloader relay incorrectly. Does this make any sense?
Also, I have one remaining bare brown/black wire I've traceed back to the headlight switch. But I don't see this on the wiring diagrams. Does anyone know what it's for? Headlights & (rear) foglights work fine! Thanks

So, again for closure. Found that the handbrake light was finding ground through the C101 via the unloader circuit. Tested both unloader relays to find one was sticking. Fixed and replaced, problem solved. Faith restored in my loom skills! Put sheer time spent down to lack of experience.
Still don't know what that brown/black wire from the headlight switch is though!

It's a second wire from the dimmer switch. Goes to the lamp in an analogue clock, and to pin 3 of the dash loom plug and socket next to the accessories socket.Motorhole wrote: Still don't know what that brown/black wire from the headlight switch is though!
