Howdy all .
So, I've got my 86 320i all back together and running after a bare shell rebuild, but before I start dismantling the interior again!!, I thought I would ask here in case I'm missing something obvious.
Basically I have a black multi plug from the electric mirrors coming out of the speaker opening in the drivers footwell,
I assume this is the main power feed for the electric wing mirrors(,as there not working) and would reach roughly to the ecu under the speedos,
But where does it plug into?? As I can't see/find anything obvious, have I made a cock up refitting the wire loom and that should be on the passenger side footwell and fit into the same multi socket that the radio loom plugs into??.
Any advice would be much appreciated or if anyone knows where the feed for the mirrors is?
Many thanks kev

Shouldn't the plug be in the door where the tweeter pod is?

Hi yes the mirrors connect to the loom in the door there. Then that door loom plugs into the car loom where the hinges of the doors are. That loom comes out of the speaker opening with the plug, then over to the passenger side door..
So I assume there's a power feed that fits the plug as it's an single circuit

First thing I'm going to do is move this to the correct forum, which if it had been posted in, I would have seen and answered it yesterday.
1/ The black multi pin socket, that you're looking for a plug to fit it, is the socket for the optional interior light delay module, so it's not surprising that you can't find the plug! The purpose of the wire is to cancel the delay off if the ignition is switched on.
2/ The power feed to the mirror switch is green/white BUT it changes to green/black on the body side of the door loom plug and socket in the A panel. There is a splice in the green/white wire in the door loom, with one branch going to the mirror switch, and the other branch going back to another pin in the A pillar plug and socket - the one that goes to the light delay module socket.
3/ The green/black from fuse 19 goes down through the duct underneath the fusebox, into the area behind the glovebox, then goes back the LH sill, across the back seat, then forward along the RH sill, and eventually to the A pillar socket. It is in the same loom as the interior light wires.

Brian, sorry for posting in the incorrect section, and thanks for the information,I have tested the circuit and have a live feed from the green/black,
At the plug closest to the mirrors with 4 pins I have -
a constant negative on 1
A negative when you move the switch from left to right on1
A positive when you move the switch up and down on1
And nothing on 1 which is black in the door loom and it the pin on its own as the other 3 are together!
All with no response from mirrors,
So at least power is reaching them.
Should it be a constant live to work with the switch negative?
Will test the mirrors next to see if they worked before.
Many thanks for the replies.

Most people assume that each mirror contains two electric motors - one to move the glass from side to side, and one to tilt it up and down.
This is incorrect. There is only one motor in each mirror, and this moves the glass from side to side. The second 'motor' (looks very similar) is actually a solenoid which moves a gear to transfer the motor's output from side to side to up and down.
When either door mirror is moved from side to side, just the motor on the appropriate side operates, but when you change to up and down, the same motor operates, but the solenoids on BOTH sides also engage with an audible click. You don't normally hear the click in the mirror not being operated, because of the noise from the one that is.
The black wire at each mirror should have 12 volts + on it at all times when the ignition is on nd the mirror switch isn't being operated. Check this by connecting a 12 volt bulb of at least 5W between the black wire at the brown wire (earth). A meter will give a misleading result.
The white wire at each mirror should have 12 volts on it only when the mirror switch is moved to "up" or "down".
The blue wire at each mirror is normally open circuit, but connects either to 12V+ or earth when the mirror switch is moved on the side the L/R selector switch is at.

This circuit diagram might help: http://www.autolib.diakom.ru/CAR/BMW/19 ... /fig09.pdf
but note that Blue and Black are labelled the wrong way around on both mirrors.

Hi Brian, thanks for the reply, I ran out of time on it today and will hopefully get a couple of hours on it tomorrow and find out what's going on.
Will let you know what the issue is.
Thanks kev

Right!!
So I have power in all the right places I think after cleaning all the contacts and when I move the knob up/down ,left/right there's a click and it sounds like the motor trys to move briefly but there is no movement with the mirror, but when I look at the motor the spindle opposite end of the plastic cog try's to turn 1mm or so but the cog doesn't.
So is there a way to disassemble the plastic cage from the motor without braking them, or should I just buy some working mirrors and swap the motors into mine??.

Many thanks for the replies.
