The standard bush is a concentric design, meaning the hole for the wishbone is in the centre of the bush. M3 models were fitted with eccentric bushes, which pushed the end of the wishbone closer to the centre of the wheel arch, increasing the caster. This is considered a worthwhile upgrade for all E30s. . . . . "

It does make a difference and you will notice on turn in, but its not everyones favorite upgrade - same as strut brace.

I however like it!!

Thanks for the reply, do you have an opinion on the Powerflex poly bushes rather than real BMW rubber ones??

Rubber every time. Powerflex and similar introduce unwanted friction into the design.

As Brian said use the E30 M3 solid rubber bushes, they are much better and about half the cost

ive only ever had oem ones in past cars and enjoyed the feel through the steering. I have a set of Poly ones I am about to fit to my current project so - by the sound of it - I may regret - but willing to take the chance.

What I don't have in my garage is a suitable press or puller for dealing with removal and insertion of the standard bushes, so I was looking at the poly's as an easier route for a DIY job, but maybe I need to invest in some extra gear as I'm intending to rebuild the struts and front end steering bits as I've an ongoing geometry drift over time - from perfect alignment to poor over three or four weeks - the new BMW bushes look fine, can't find any movement in anything so far - top mounts are dry - no grease at all, which is bad, one ancient spring and one new, so almost 3 cm ride height difference between front left and right.. so its all being replaced.

I don't have press in my own workshop either (but I do know someone nearby who has).
All you need to remove the old bush is a hacksaw to cut outwards, through the outer steel ring. Just before you reach the metal of the lollipop, the bush will collapse slightly, and be easy to push out.
All I normally use to fit new bushes is a block of wood and a large hammer. Make sure you keep the bush square to the hole in the lollipop, and the usual trick of heating the lollipop and cooling the bush helps

I did get old ones out but no way to get the new in - also what's the alternative to the BMW "lube" you are supposed to use on the bush center/pin which drys out? Fairy liquid?

Fairy liquid (50% diluted if the genuine stuff) is fine for pushing the bush onto the pin. Throw a bit of hot water around afterwards, to get rid of it.
No tools at all are required for that - it pushes onto the pin by hand. A block of wood jammed between the floor pan and the rear half of the control arm helps keep the pin from moving around while you do so, and clean the pin up first with emery cloth.

The expensive BMW bushes I have on at the moment show no signs of wear at all, probably done 5K miles, so to start with, I'm looking for other possible problems - OK on the Fairy Liquid, thanks!
