Anyone fitted an Alloy exhaust from modmart before? theyre always advertised on E-bay, usually twin exit or weird quad exits...
Anyway i made (what would appear to be) the mistake of buying one such exhaust for my 320i (i got a DTM version) that supposedly was tailor made for the e30.. well i fitted it, and found that its 1/3 of the size of the original backbox, and therefor doesnt reach the hangers, and is rediculously loud!!! It cannot be securely clamped, and therefor swings about and rattles etc...Terrible!
just wondered if anyone had tried fitting one before??
MODMART Exhausts..

I think ive seen these advertised, they look so badly made, but are very cheap.
If its what im thinking of, they do say that you will need a fitting kit at the cost of Ԛ£16 extra and also, baffles are an extra cost.
Have you contacted the seller to tell him its a load of crap and doesnt fit properly?

Yes, I too made the mistake of buying this shambolic product for my 320i. Fitting was a pain, mainly cos the first fitting kit they gave me was too fat and only one piece, whereas my back box was twin entry. They did send me the correct kit and after a couple of hours under my car sawing away (!) I got the old box off. I had to tighten the clamps supplied so hard to stop leaks that my hand ached from the physical strain for 3 days. Even with fitted baffles, my car sounded like a fart from the dark lord himself, and at 100mph+ sounded like the high-pitched tone of your mother's voice when you're a kid and have done something wrong. My ears ring to this date.I have long since taken great pleasure in putting this box in the bin, my advice is to scout for a proper one and pay a bit more!
yeah i bought the fitting kit which is absolute joke, its a piece of flexi pipe... lot of money for that!
i have contacted the seller who got very shirty and says hes sold hundreds to BMW owners and never had a single problem, and that i am obviously doing something wrong....
well i int daft and have worked on cars for many years, and know what im doing (except it would appear when buying aftermarket exhausts!) I got the box with the baffles, but its still obscenely loud, my neighbours wouldnt put up with it, and id feel like a nob driving around with that racket!
Anyone know where i can get a nice looking exhaust that doesnt sound "like a fart from tha dark lord himself!!" (Well put braincat) not bothered about it being loud as im well past those days!

Depends on what you're willing to spend really. Unless you go the whole way and get a nice one piece all the way through then supersprint or sebring are generally quite tasty. I just got a sebring back box off an ebay chap who'd rubbed his car the wrong way up a lamppost, and its suprisingly good. It purrs instead of screams and the car is certainly much smoother through acceleration. Just remeber that you pay for what you get quality wise.
depends on your model, some 320i's have three sections, others have two. I had touble finding a back box for mine cos it was two part (downpipe to centre box, then connecting pipe to back box. Its all up to you, you can always get a down pipe from a 325i ( with appropriate maifold) and then the remaining sections. Seems two-parts are rarer than three.
ok mate, cheers, Just to let you know, the guy from MODMART has stopped answering his e-mails, and would appear not to be sorting me out with a refund, wouldnt really recommend them to anyone after this! I'll keep you posted on the outcome.
Right, had contact from the chap at MOD MART, he's actually been very very helpful, and has offered to either rebuild the backbox, enlarging it to accomodate more sound deadening, or supply me with an inline baffle to add to the back of the box to muffle the sound more.
Now he says that this wont affect performance, and im inclined to agree bearing in mind there is no obstruction at all in the backbox itself (and therefor no back pressure, which cant be too good) What do you guys think? should i post my box back to him and get it rebuilt, or go with the inline baffle for free?

Surely a baffle will be an obstruction. How much was this state of the art merchandise by the way?
If it was me, id use my statutory rights to reject the item under the Sale of Goods Act as its NOT of satisfactory quality or fit for the purpose.

well no more than any baffle in a normal exhaust, the fact is that it has no baffles at the mo, and i asked for it to be made WITH baffles, so its far too loud! you ought to have some degree of backpressure in an exhaust, and at the moment its effectively straight through, and not helping performance at all. (not that i think it will do with baffles obviously, i just dont want it to reduce performance) its simply a replacement for a rotten and blowing backbox as far as im concerned. (It cost Ԛ£39 plus delivery, so cant expect too much!) It looks lush tho, so if i can get it to fit right and sound right i'l be happy.
At the end of the day you have to do what you feel happy with; its your car after all. I was happy with mine for a couple of months before the horrible noise made me want to cut my bits off with a rusty tape measure. Plus the nightmare fitting adds to practical expertise which is never a bad thing.
Lol, i dont think even that noise would make me want to touch my bits with a tape measure, rusty or otherwise! Im gonna send it back and have the box adapted, he seems pretty happy about it, so hopefully everyone will end up relatively pleased.....! it does look nice!
