HI Can you tell me the procedure for checking oil level on my e30 1.6 1989 Auto.

1, Owners handbook says normal operating temperature, on flat ground in idle or park.

2, sure i read somewhere about going through all the selector positions
first. ie PRN321 the 23NR back in P and check with a clean preferable white lint free cloth.

thankyou

How can you check the gearbox oil when it's engaged in Reverse and drives 1,2,3...? 8O

You check the gearbox oil as you do the engine oil, there is a max and min level and if its in-between the two markers closer to the max then its fine.

The WiKi advises Castrol Dextron III

no you don,t. Its checked in one of the 2 ways in OP. with the engine in idle. at normal temp.

and reason to use a white rag is so you can examine the colour of the oil , if its dark brown and/or smells burn change it.

With auto boxes I always check them in neutral, at operating temperature after I have selected all the gears.

1 for 'normal' level checking.
2 if the box has been drained and refilled.

Don't forget that gearbox oil level isn't like engine oil level. Engine oil level drops over time as part of the normal running of the engine. Gearbox oil level only drops if there's a leak.
