Hi chaps , my friend has a 325i convertible, he took the car to get mot done, so i was following him and the car had a big misfire and black puff of smoke come out of the exhaust and it cut off, we managed to get it running again and got the the car to mot station was driving fine but you can smell was running rich, then it done same thing on the way back, big misfire puff of black smoke and it flamed from the exhuast ! now it wont start, wants to turn over but nothing? Side note it hasnt got a airbox on it at the minute, which may have contributed to it?

I would attach the air box and try again as when I forgot to tighten up the large jubilee clip and the hose worked itself loose it ran like a bag of nails rattling.

Did it pass the MOT?

I would get a compression test done to test engine internals, pistons, rings and valves first.
if thats o.k look at fuel system. next ignition check you git a spark.

To check if the piston rings, valves, etc. are still OK - you should see around 190 psi on each of the six cylinders.

whats were the actual results of the test?

what color are the ends of the spark plugs- a photo would help.

have you got a spark ?. take a plug out reconnect to the ignition lead. lay on top of engine so its earthed, get some one to turn engine over briefly you should be able to see a nice healthy spark between the electrode at end of spark plug. no not touch it high voltage.

if got a spark. then check out fuel delivery. is the fuel pump running ( only runs when you are cranking engine or engine running ) you can hear a very slight hum from the back of car it's in the fuel tank. check fuses to F/P AND relay , my relay died a while back, car won't start then.

also check all pipes in engine bay look for a bad vacuum leaks , leading to the throttle body. it could be something to do with the air box being changed , can you fit the original back. with the air flow meter and all associated pipes and wiring.

When you say the car doesn't have an airbox, is it definitely only the airbox missing or is it the air flow metre (AFM) as well?
If the car is trying to run without its AFM then you will have all sorts of trouble.
