So, about 18 months ago I bought a 325i, 123k, convertible, auto, chromie, zinnoberrot, Late 1986. Perlbeige leather. Will add pics soon.

Since this time, my car has hit a "difficult age". Since it hit 30, bit by bit by bit everything has gone t*ts up, broken, perished, cracked, etc. Consequently, my "to do list" that was supposed to be cosmetic, hasn't been touched. As every time I take it in for something, they find something else. Then I take it somewhere else, they find another thing.. then they fix it, then something else breaks. It’s not been run much because of it.

I bought it with new cambelt, new water pump, MOT, minimal rust. No dash cracks...It's just then everything else has gone wrong.

And now......

yep, the head's cracked.

Here’s it’s last MOT:

oil light flickers on and off on dash?

In my ownership it’s had:

All of the above, new PS rack, new rubber boot, new fuel injectors. Bought a new head, had it tested/reconditioned.

Little jobs I did: new gas shocks, new badges, new air filter, oil change.

Jobs to do:

Get new cylinder head on. Sort the broken cab roof. Sort the paint (dull, white spots, swirls) fix seat bolster. Get some style 5 alloys.

To contextualise, I am a woman whose only experience of doing anything with cars has been with this car. My passion for 1980s cars far outweighs any mechanical ability. I’m learning on this car. The Previous owner had it 20 years, spent a lot of its time being imported in and out of Spain, so it’s at least been kept quite dry.

This is a nice car (well it could be) with some lovely optional extras. I want it to be everything it can be! So here’s it’s progress, but I will need to ask advice as everyone I know is useless with cars ”¦. First questions coming up..

The roof... manual roof, tension seems to have gone on it - was driving it one day and it ripped off- you know the two little clips inside? they wouldnt clip back on- it took three people trying to force it back to meet the seal. Took it back down and now there's a blood y hole in the horseshoe lid

OK.. Cylinder head question time.

How hard a job is it to do? Can I get a local mechanic to do it? how many hours labour would you think?

I called one guy up who tried to even query it needed doing asking me if i'd seen the crack. I haven't - another mechanic told me it was cracked - it explains the poor running and it's last breakdown in the road where smoke was coming out and it kept starting up and eventually dying.

How do you know for sure that the head has cracked?

This should give you some idea of what's involved:

Something that should be do-able within a weekend, I'd have thought...

A good local mechanic should be perfectly capable of doing the job, but it may be quite expensive...I'd be inclined to maybe try some K-Seal or similar in it first, to see if it cures the coolant loss, assuming those are your symptoms.

That's the thing I don't - they never physically showed me. My oil pressure light has been on, and my coolant seems to be going somewhere as the light on the check panel keeps coming on - when it idles there are clouds of white smoke, then it runs like sh**, then dies. I am not surprised, put it this way.

likely you have more than one problem -the head may have been cracked (885 heads are prone to it) but burning white smoke sounds more like valve stem seals or broken/knackered piston rings.

has it had a compression test?- what were the results?

before having the new head fitted why not overhaul it yourself- this is something you could do with modest tools:
