Can you use an ecu from another car if the numbers match your existing ecu or do you still have to get it re coded

Nothing to re code, and the numbers don't even necessarily have to match. There was more than one version of the ECU used during the production run of most E30 models, especially the M20.

Thanks for getting back to me. Im having trouble starting my car. Iv changed the fuel pump and fuel relay also The cps but the fuel relay doesnt click and no power to the injectors. I jumped the fuel pump relay and could hear the fuel pump working but the engine just cranks over. Iv replaced the spark plugs and they are sparking but no action with the injectors. This is why iv bought a new ecu to see if thats the culprit. Its a 1990 318i. Could ypu give me any ideas on what you think it is. Iv checked every connection with the wiring and nothing is broken. Thanks

I would firstly try a replacement fuel pump relay, if bridging it gets the fuel pump working.

I've just realised that you're the same person with the other non start thread going, and this is beginning to turn into a parallel thread which can be most confusing!
I've answered on the other thread.
