Removing ignition barrel without key

Hi,

I have a 1987 e30 baur convertible and I have lost the key. I have purchased a new lock set for the car but need to know how I can remove the barrel without the key. Any help will be grgreatly appreciated.

As Brian posted you should be able to get a key cut if you go to BMW with the relevant documents.

I assume the steering lock has "locked" the steering?

Unfortunately i can't get a key because it is not the original barrel, I have the original key but it does not work. TBH I never tried the key before, in the last 10 years, and it's only now I realised it was not the original barrel or locks on the car.

Yes the steering will is locked. Is it possible to use a screwdriver to try and turn the ignition? I've seen a few videos on YouTube.

A badly worn barrel might turn with a screwdriver, but otherwise you're somewhat stuffed.
A drill might work I suppose - (it certainly worked on a standard uPVC house door lock I had to remove last week. shocked that it took less than 30 seconds to open).
Might be preferable to change the whole column, but then you'll have to deal with headless security bolts.

I'd assume that you can drill out the lock then remove the rest of the barrel.

It was a PITA when I had the "spinning" barrel syndrome in an E36 that I had years back.

Thanks for the advice, So if I drill the lock out will it release the steering lock also.

Can't remember the process on the E30 but on the E36 is was a major PITA as the colour had to come apart and the headless/snap off security bolts had to be drilled out.
