Just checked the ETK, and the only thing they share is the control unit and clutch switch.

I think you'd be better off looking for a kit in all honesty, you can pick them up for less than Ԛ£100, bits on they're own are hard to come by!

I think the actuator is the same, except the E34 will have a longer loom as the ECU sits on the right hand side of the engine bay, where as the E30 one sits above the glove box.

Me thinks you might be able to get a few bits off the E34.

Tiniest change in the spec of an item will result in a different part number on the ETK. If they share a control unit, then I would bet that the actuators are very similar.
Would be a case of trying one and see, I think, and then sharing the knowledge with the rest of us.
Is it just M20 E34s that have the same controller, or M50s as well?

E34 has 2 different control units listed, one is used on E34 and E32 only, the other control unit is used on E34, E32, E31, E36 and Z3.
The first one is used on E34 M20 and M50, the second one I mentioned is E34 M50 only.

Again these may be interchangable , the second just a more modern version of the first, reflecting developments in electronics, just like the two versions of the interior light delay.
