I just picked a 1987 325i for almost nothing because it doesn't run, I suspect it's because of these two wires, red and green, coming out from the fuse box along the same group of wires that goes to the abs control unit and headlights. Can anyone tell me where they go to in their car?
I'm new here, I don't know how to post pictures or I would.
Half finished wiring

red = perm 12V
green = ignition circuit
Brianmooooore is your Guru man and hopefully he will post up in in the morning
Post more details up of the car, model year blah blah blah as then it will be easier to diagnose the issues.

1987 325i Motronic 1.3, where are they going to after the fuse box then? I assumed the green came from the ignition switch but I'm not sure if they're necessary to start the car or not because the green ignition wire divides into a whole array of green wires shortly after the connector on the column.
I know I need power on the ECU #27 pin from the ignition switch and since the OBC isn't in the car I've read that I need to connect some connector from under the dash to the one that's branching out of the ECU plug that has three wires, green, white, blue/black.
Also, do I need the little box above the ECU with a blue connector? Isn't it supposed to be an idle control module or something? I traced the blue connector back to a black plug under the dash very similar in shape to the ones for the window motors (kind of like an apple with a bump at the top) where is this supposed to connect to?

This is going to be hard going without pics! Look at the 'stickies' at the top of the 'for sale' forums to see how to post them on here.
The wiring an an E30 conforms to a fairly strict colour code, and as SexyLady says, plain red = 12 volts straight from the battery and plain green is ignition switched 12 volts, unfused.
A 1987 car doesn't help with the diagnosis, because this is the year that major changes were made, and you may have the old version, the new version, or, in a few cases, a mixture of the two.
I'm intrigued by a box with a blue connector above the ECU. This is the location for the relay box associated with an OBC, but it should have two green plugs. Are you sure about the colour? (My father had blue/green colour blindness, and the two were the same colour to him.)
Motronic 1.3 uses a self contained engine loom, which only needs connections direct to the battery and 12 volts to pin 7 of the 20 pin C101 engine loom plug (beside fusebox) for the engine to run. All the electronics is in the ECU, with no separate modules for idle control, cold start, etc.
If an OBC has been simply removed, the green ignition feed wire to the ignition coil and pin 27 of the ECU, that goes via pin 7 of the C101, will be broken at a two pin plug located behind the glovebox (middle-top right). This plug will have a plain green wire going to each of the two pins, and if the OBC loom is still in place will be connected to a plain green and a green/red wire. If the OBC was OE, then there should be a bypass plug (plug fitted with a short loop of green wire) tied up to the loom nearby.
First check to make is to see if there is 12 volts between the + terminal of the ignition coil and a good body earth (on RH suspension turret).
Where is your battery located?

My son has an 1987 car and as Brian mentioned there are differences, the diagnostic port in the engine bay, does it have a flip cap and is small in size or is it larger with a screw cap, also the coolant bottle is different as mentioned photos of the engine bay and wiring would help and if Brian can see them then hopefully your problems will be resolved.

RHD car, pre- facelift.
Screw off plug in bay, and coolant overflow bottle looks like large pill
these are the two wires coming from the fuse box

Box above ECU with blue plug

Are these the bypass plugs?

I thought this was the relay box

Thanks for the help.
