After sorting out my prop (incorrectly fitted together) the beast has been smooth and lovely for about a year - now I'm noticing vibration between 40 and 50 mph when under load - if I coast, out of gear at this speed, perfect, engage gear and accelerate, vibration returns. Smooth driving 60mph and above.

Any observations - I'm going to open it all up and inspect, but maybe someone has an idea where to go first - Guibo is 2 years old as is the center bearing - the balance issue I had before caused vibration regardless of load or being in gear at all, so I guess its not that.

Vibration in that range of speed is most likely caused by something rotating at the same speed as the wheels.

OK, I'll start at the back end.. also I read everywhere that when removing the gearbox output flange/guibo and prop that you should mark the prop front flange position, why is this? Surely the output flange/drive is balanced and so is the prop and so is the input to the diff at the other end - what could be out of balance if you re assemble it in a non original position? just wondering, surely not every transmission/prop/diff are balanced as a complete unit...or?

Just standard 'good practice', and as you surmise, total b****x.

When I had the guibo checked on my car years back it was found to be fitted back to front.

There is a lot of lateral movement on the NS half shaft, more than the OS and it "knocks" against the hub - what controls the half shaft float on the splines?

There's a short video here -

Turns out two of the three self locking nuts on the gearbox to guibo flange are no longer locking - not been replaced with new ones and had come loose - BAD!

Smooth as a babies bottom again.
