Opening Bosch Alternator

OK, so my new bearing has arrived, alternator on the floor, pulley off, 4 long cross headed bolts hold it together - is the only route an impact driver? the threads are seriously in there, and I'm concerned about ripping out the cross heads - if I do, then I'm fooooked.

Any thoughts as a blow torch really doesn't apply in this case.

I tried with a screw driver, once. And proceeded to drill all four of them out and replace the bolts. m5x100mm do the job.

That's the way I went, now the bearings? Are they stuck in there or what? Now it's time for some heat!

Bearings are just an interference fit*. Heat on the alloy casing will help get them out.

*IIRC, this is an alternator that has already been 'rebuilt', so there's the possibility of some bodging juice having been used previously to hold the bearings in.

Yes Brian, I think this was the case - but they are out, cleaned up and new bearings fit perfectly - I used the well known "SWT" method for extraction.
