Decided it was time to install the new head unit and speakers today.
Got everything together, including nice new ISO connector, took off the front console to make access easier and this is what I found.

Image

Doesn't it make you want to cry. 20 minute job?

Questions:

1 is an original loom(?) to which a 2 pin connector is attached. 1 wire has been cut at the connector. What is/was this loom for and what is the connector for?

3 is the "loom" for the radio/cass that was fitted.

4 is some sort of primitive Blackpool lights and has been wired up to the butchered cig lighter wiring. These were hidden away under the console - whoever did it was probably too ashamed to show them!

5 & 6 are wires leading to the Blackpool set up. But what were they originally.

Can anyone tell me what I need to scrap, (apart from the obvious unwanted illuminations), and what should be kept/replaced to get back to what it should be?

Then I can get back to the original 20 minute stereo fitting job!!!!!!!!!!

Can't get bigger picture. Had to use old digi camera with crap resolution and if I increase the size it just gets all blurry.

If someone can just tell me what colour cables should feed the ciggy lighter and its' bulb and anything else that should be there, I can probably figure the rest out.

Tried enlarging the picture. Helps a bit, but as you say, the resolution isn't there.
OE radio loom is a four wire loom from a four pin plug going into the accessories socket at the back of the glovebox.
Colours are red/green = perm 12V+, grey/red = panel lights, white/purple = switched 12V+, and brown = earth.
Cigarette lighter power feed is red/yellow and its bulb is grey/red and brown/white.
Two other wires associated with the radio that might be around, are a twin cable made up of a red wire and a white wire. The red wire is a permanent 12V+ feed to the electric aerial, and the white wire is the control signal for it (12V+ = aerial up, 0V = aerial down).

Thanks very much Brian. Knew if you were online I was in with a chance.
Any idea what the 2 pin connector is? - it looks original.

If cig feed is red/yell I take it the other wire is an earth. Where should this run to.

AFAIK all the earths (browns) at the front of the car (with one non relevant exception) end up at a couple of 6mm studs above the top of the glovebox.
Can't make out the two pin connector. What colour wires?

Brian. Been out with the torch and checked your previous.

Loom 1 in pic is original radio loom - all correct colours as above.
Wires at 5 are cig lighter power, as you said, and brown which I take to be the earth.
Wires at 6 are bulb feed as above, but from the bulb holder there are two much heavier guage cables (black & red) which I assume are part of the general butchery. Are the original grey/red & brown/white wires supposed to go directly to the bulb holder?

Can't check on the wire colours for the connector tonight - battery gone in torch.

Have a good start for tomorrow, if I have any probs. will post again.

Many thanks for the help.

.
Wires should connect directly to the lamp holder.
Black and red wires sound like they have been stripped from a piece of old colour mains flex, and sound like they should be removed!

If you're out there Brian?

Wiring for ICE all sorted and ciggy lighter etc. resoldered correctly and now ready to fit head unit and wire speakers.

Having a final check thru' the fitting instr. and came across this.

"WARNING
If you have a power aerial without a relay box, connecting this unit with the supplied power lead may damage the aerial."

Have got an aerial off EKO, which is working when tested with battery, to replace the original Hirschmann(?) unit, which appears to have a relay mounted on the mast above the motor. The replacement doesn't have one.

Q. How will the aerial be damaged?
Q. Can the relay from the original be adapted to the new one?

Thanks in advance.

Large amount of guesswork here, but some aerials are worked just like your E30 electric windows - you have to push a switch to raise it and push another to lower it. There is no limit switch to cut the power at the end of the aerials travel, and if you continue to hold the switch, the motor will be damaged or the cutout/fuse trip.
Other electric aerials, OE included, have limit switches and cut the power (by a relay) when the mast is either fully up or down, so the power can be continuously applied to keep the mast up.
Don't be in too much hurry to bin the OE unit - I wouldn't be in the least surprised if you can buy a new mast for it.
