Autobox sticking in first

If I start my car from cold and drive off down my street in the D position, it often sticks in first gear. As the car warms up it'll finally shift into second then third.

My girlfriends dad was the previous owner and I know he had changed the gearbox oil a few times trying to cure the problem.

If rev the car really hard too 4000 rpm it'll change to second and then it's fine from then onwards, but I don't like doing that on a cold engine.

Any other thoughts?

I had similar issues after I changed the engine and had to drain the box, they can be very sensitive to the level of fluid and to much or not enough does cause issues. I replaced mine and never had a issue.
