Because the driver's door mechanism probably hasn't been serviced/lubricated/adjusted for thirty years, coupled with wear on the alloy piece at the back end of the lock barrel assembly.
If the alloy piece hasn't seized on its bearing, a slight adjustment of the lock motor in its slotted mounting holes may restore the locking function, but this should be accompanied by a full service.

I had a similar problem several years ago. Eventually, the lock will "freeze" causing you to be locked out. My key almost snapped; I stopped knowing the lock was stuck. Fortunately, my window had enough opening to allow me to open the door; there is a trick since you can't just pull on the knob to open the door.

I ordered a new lock from a BMW dealer using the VIN to match my keys. There is rebuild kit fro the dealer, too. After replacing the lock, the lock works in the normal and dead bolt position with ease.

Replace it before you are locked out. If the windows are closed, your only option is to pull the windshield off.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.
