Hi all, managed a couple of hours in the garage yesterday. When I fitted the oil pick up pump I noticed the third hole does not line up. Any advice welcome. I reckon there's two options
1 leave with two bolts only
2 drill out the hole to line up.

Both have risks.

I guessed you'd know it's an M50B28

What is the pump from, M50 or M52?

It should have all three bolts m8x45

Ah, I'm not 100%!!! E34 sump and dipstick all taken from an m50b25 which had been fitted to an e30.

So I guess it could be from the m50b25

I'll have to check the number on it.

What block is it, M50 steel M52 aluminium.

Going by the pics it looks like a m52.

You left out option 3 - find out why it doesn't line up.
Options 1 and 2 will end up costing a lot of money one way or another!

I'm just home from work. I'll go out and get part numbers for the pump.

The engine is m50b28? S reg e36 2.8. A friend of mine was breaking an e30 with an m50b25 with fire damage, I bought the sump and oil pump from him. So all I can say is it was fitted to an m50b25 which was fitted in an e30.

This is what happens when you fit an M50 pump to an M52, bag round the pump and tape it up then 5 mins with a round file or burr will let you bolt it down

Cool, pleased you worked it out.

The crank looks like 2.8 the 2.5 are easy to spot.

Now you need to sort the splash baffle out.
I can't remember if you need the M50 one or M52 one with your setup. But it is needed 100%

There is a splash baffle on the inside of the M50 sump. Is that not enough?

That aluminium baffle needs removing and the pressed steel one refitting to the underside of the block

Ok, I didn't realise that. I'll cut the bracket for the pick up off and refit. Cheers.

As dan says the sump baffle total remove.

Are you sure its a Steel block or aluminium?

If aluminium use the m52b28/m5430 block baffle. If steel use the M50 one. Believe they were on the m50b25TU vanos spec ones, not 100% sure on that.

It will need abit of cutting on crank weight number six, as it will hit on other conversions I have seen.

You be ok with it though. Fit and turn it over by hand and you soon see.

For peace of mind, get a m52 spec pump!
You know once you do all this work and the pump will sod up.
And you will blame it on the pump because its not for that block.

SODS LAW as always

Ok, just so I straight, my engine is an m52b28, s reg 2.8 which was rotten but 80k on the clock.

Not sure how I check the block is steel or aluminum. My guess is aluminum.

Here is the m52 pump and splash guard
Image

So how can I fit an m52 pump if the pick up is heading in the wrong direction?

This pick up is to the rear of the block

I can take the puck up bracket off the splash guard, but that pump will bolt on but won't fit the sump.

Cheers for the patience so for.

Unbolt the long M52 oil pickup pipe from the pump and refit the short M50 pickup.

Oh! It's that simple! My bad. I only manage to spend a couple of hours a week in my garage rest of the time I post silly questions on here. I'm sure I'd have figured that out if I'd looked at it.
Thanks.

When the torque wrench clicks, STOP. Resist the urge to turn that little extra "just to be sure".
Far more problems are caused by fasteners that are over tightened than by those that are under tightened.

Lessons learned!

There was a problem with my workmanship here, I admit that

My mistakes;
1. I put the bolt back into the hole without cleaning the hole / thread out after cleaning the remainder of the original gasket and the corrosion off the underside of the block.
2 there was corrosion on the end of thread of the bolt thread which should have been cleaned off also.
Both of these mistakes were because I was trying to hurry up as I needed to get finished and then get back in the house for a certain time.

Less haste more speed!

I will be working on the underside of the engine once again this weekend instead of the next job. That will give me time to dwell on that!!

Ive done bolts to spec, by hand and the threads just let go. its a gutting thing to happen. Its a WTF moment...

Sometimes dont do it to the spec just hand tight. If it feels tight than thats it.. odd time as I said you do it by hand and light as ever the treads just go.. crying game time...
