Anyone able to help a mechanical retard here?

I took the inlet manifold off my IS today to replace the 2 fuel lines underneath that went fine, however to get the manifold off I had to remove all the lines/hoses

I'm having trouble putting the 2 coolant hoses back on - they dont want to reach the manifold/throttle and if I put the inlet further on so they do I cant get my hand in there to attach them & tighten them up
No. 11 and 16 in this diagram
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do ... g=11&fg=35
same problem with the thin vaccum line that goes from the fuel pressure regualtor to the throttle, cant make it reach

Anyone got any tips? I know they reach when its all put together!
Is there a knack to this?

I had to give up tonight as the light was fading and I managed to drop a hose clamp into the engine bay somwhere :(
Cheers,
Robin

i have no idea why you can't get them to reach fella, the coolant ones are a bit tricky and are a source of minor leaks etc, but the vacuum one is fairly straightforward, you can trace it from the fuel pressure reg. for the coolant ones, check the U shaped metal thing and the rocker and ICV breather hoses etc are all in place properly. i would personally do away with the heater block things on the throttle body, they just get in the way, make taking the inlet manifold off more fiddly and they can leak. a fuel injection specialist place replaced the hose from one heater plate to the other on mine, 6 mths or so later the replacement hose was slightly leaking so i did away with them.

Don't worry your not the only one to have this problem, i too had the same problem. I spent a full day tearing my hair out trying to A-team the situation. The long hose i had no problem attaching it to the manifold but the smaller one was an arse. First buy a new no.12 part from bmw, as this new part is a lot stiff and easier to guide into the whole. Put the jubilee clips on the end and tighten just enough so they hold on. Then using a pair of plumbers grips (the long sort with the adjustable slide end) take hold of the pipe in the gap between the manifold and rocker cover and slide the ends on the correct holes on the manifold. Then using a jubilee screwdriver entering from the front of the block tighten the clips up (this is fiddly and will take a second to find the route but do-able). This worked for me and i hope you have the same outcome.

Yeah I was thinking of trying that with the small pipe, hadn't really got to that stage but was thinking ahead as it looked a problem too.

Frustrated the hell out of me in the winter too, guess an added advantage is I got so hot n bothered I didnt feel the cold anymore LOL
Got grazes all over my hands and a massive bruise on the back of my thumb for my troubles though

Not going to mess with the heater plate, as I say I'm mechanically retarded, just want to get the thing back together so I can drive again!

There seem to be 2 different types of that heater plate on the IS too, a round and a square one like mine - whats all that about?

Do it again - are you a glutton for punishment?
I only took the manifold off cause I had a fuel leak
Cheers,
Robin

lol, shit that shounds bad....think you'll find it much easier when you start from fresh on it, rather than at the end of a day getting dark etc.
i've had mine on and off must be about 5 times in the last month trial fitting the throttle bodies, the more you do it the easier it is. thankfully no water jackets for me though, in fact i've missed out the U bend around the breather pipes and everything, it just goes straight from the block to the head, much less chance of leakage this way, and less clutter.
i'm not sure why 12 is proving to be so tricky, i thought i found 16 more of a pita. is the throttle body housing in place when you're doing this?
if you get rid of the heater plate, it does make life a lot easier. i also found that having the lower inlet manifold off is a v good idea while there, allows you to replace the (no doubt 15 yr old and crummy) gasket and clean out the injectors - solved an annoying intermittent ticking noise on mine. also reminds me - is a good idea to clean out the ICV and breather pipes while there too.

they all seem to have trouble with those pipes. to do it right i ended up going to bmw for the hose and new clips. been ok since. all the 318is i've worked on have had square water plates.

Throttle body is attached, I tried taking it off, but it didnt seem to help, and anyway the 2 lower bolts on the square bit are such a pain to get to.

Looking again at the diagram it seems all my hoses were attached all the wrong way around anyway, not that I can see it matters
13 is going to the 2 side bits, and 11 to the bottom. 16 has part 12 on it
I think from memory anyway

Robin

when i did mine. i connected the pipe to the heater block whilst the heater block was still loose, then i just manipulated the heater block onto the throttle body housing

it does take alot of arsing around with to get it right, but you'll get there. its just trial and error really...
