Hi there, my 86 325i runs too hot (gauge says it's fine, but bonnet is scalding hot after a short run) and after looking in the fuse box, fuse 18, relay k1 and k6 (extra fan speed) are missing from my car, as well as the fan cowling. Any ideas what's going on with this? Any reason for it? Thanks.

Perhaps the 'extra fan speed' kit was only fitted to vehicles destined for hot countries.

I would replace the fan cowling as a matter or priority - this alone may solve your problem...

Or those with aircon.

Relays K1 and K6, fuses 18 and 3 are only fitted to cars with aircon.
A missing cowl on the mechanical fan will seriously reduce its effectiveness, but the fan is only used when in slow traffic or stopped, and the lack of effectiveness would only cause problems in hot weather.
None of the above will make the bonnet hot. What is the state of the insulation on the underside of the bonnet?

Thanks for all the replies guys!

Brian- Dissolving. You know, turning into grey dust. Temp gauge isn't saying it's too hot, but it feels very hot.
