Hi guys i apologies from the start as im sure this question has been asked many times...
But what is the best way to upgrade the standard power steering on an e30 without breaking the bank?
The car in question is a 1993 320i convertible, with 325i auto running gear. I will never take the car on track or race it, but i find the standard steering a bit wooley....
I have read threads on e36 and e46 steering rack upgrades and am wondering how much difference they make? What are the total costs involved? And is it something an amateur mechanic like myself could tackle on the driveway?
Is it a case of just changing the rack? Or will i need to upgrade the pump and lines too?
Also what is a purple tag steering rack?and why do people us it?
Any input would be appreciated
Thanks saj

Standard steering is very low geared by modern fashion, but I wouldn't describe it as 'wooley'. I suspect your toe setting might be a bit out.
The later, higher geared racks fit straight in, but the shaft to the steering wheel is of a slightly different length, and points in a slightly different direction, which needs a creative solution to the short jointed shaft that connects the rack to the steering column. Similarly, the two hydraulic connections to the rack are in a slightly different position - a problem that can be solved by some careful pipe bending, or you can contact DanThe for a bespoke solution to both problems.
