Cannot be that good why is the basic BMW Business on E46 so rubbish ?Andyboy wrote:I've started collecting the E36 factory fit BMW Business cassette players - they look old school and they're very good. The sound in my white Coupe on stock speakers is remarkable.

I used to work at Mercedes Benz UK in the late 80's and we had a caged area with all the Blaupunkt stuff in it, including TV's for the back of S Class, funny enough my Fiat Uno had an incredible 4 speaker amp and EQ system at the time, cough...cough...
Any idea what a New York is worth these days?

Interesting... I ordered one (reverse RDS) from eBay the other week for my E36 coupe. Although it looked fantastic in the dash, I thought it sounded terrible with cassettes.
Then the thing malfunctioned the same day I installed it, so I had to send it back for a refund. Gutted! Re-installed my Memphis SQR 88 - although not period correct - and it sounds fantastic with tapes. The head and transport design on high end Blaupunkts was very good, as was the Alpine stuff - and far superior to most of the BMW branded stuff they made.
If you have an E36 I would recommend trying to source an Alpine 7525r. They're phenomenal even by today's standards, especially when paired up with the 5952, 5957 or 5959 changer. My old man got one fitted in his early J plate E36 coupe back in the day, until some scrote broke the window and removed it. Sounded unbelievable though.

....I wish more people were still open to chatting about car audio on here. It doesn't seem ever so popular as a topic these days!
I've been collecting some of the top of the line period Blaupunkt stereo equipment for years, which now comes in handy since I've got an E30.
There's now a Memphis SQR 88 in the dash, MD 1690 'multi-dimensional' speakers in the rear, and I'm awaiting delivery of a pair of Blaupunkt HC1360 honeycomb speakers for the kick panels. In the boxes I have 2x BSA 107 amplifiers to daisy chain off of a BEQ M/S equaliser to power the front & rear speakers too, but none of that is installed yet.
I have a separate Honeycomb special component set still in it's original box, which comes with the 6.5'' honeycomb mid/woofers. I want to ditch those and use the rest of the component system with the 13cm honeycomb speakers once they arrive, as they're identical units, just they came in two different sizes. This means I can have some actual treble up-front by using Blaupunkt tweeters in the factory pod locations. I just need to buy myself a mint pair of original tweeter pods first! It should make for a very impressive period car audio install once it's done.
When it comes to mounting the amps in the boot, I want to avoid drilling any holes as my car is a very original example. I had an idea of carpeting a thin MDF board to mount the amps upside down, then fix the board to the underside of the metal shelf from inside the boot, but by using existing holes in the shelf to slip some bolts & washers through, and tighten nuts up on the underside of the board so its nice and snug.
If there's anybody out there who hasn't given in an gone and bought one of those new Blaupunkt retro-look DAB units and still has some old period gear with tape decks, I can always service them for you. I recently aligned the heads and fully cleaned / re-calibrated the deck on my SQR 88 and it now sounds wonderful. Tapes are still recorded on my Nakamichi and played back in the car on the Blaupunkt, just like it's meant to be
Anybody else as sad as me?

I had my E30 on the road over 30 years ago and it was the first car i fitted a real stereo into.
The car is still in storage waiting to be sorted and put back on the road but it still has its Nakamichi TD1200, amp and B&W MASS speakers, Unfortunately I cut the parcel shelf to fit the dual kevlar cone 6x9s in (which I regret now) It needs a service but the TD1200 still plays.
I mounted the amp and crossovers on a carpeted MDF panel but mounted it against the rear bulkhead, There was an Alpina aux tank there to which i used the same holes for 2 of the 4.
I still have the original SQM23 and handbook and parts manual the car came with.
I have been trying to find the correct period Becker which is one of the 3 radios in the handbook.
A few have bought the new DAB Blaupunkt (there was a thread on here) Good you can tune the backlight colour but it does seem to stick out further than the originals (seems to be flush with the 911 dash as that is where the money is)

I went for a boot build and wrapped it all in grey vinyl. The weight of it keeps it in place!
The angled vents are for hot air. The front panels with the mesh have fans fitted that draw out the warm air. They come on with the amp remote trigger.
Thanks
