red wagon project back to m42 plan
Moderator: martauto
recently purchased this turd that has an eta 2.7 donk with 320i head .............

the full front subframe engine box and steering were chucked back on for transportation after it was taken out for resto work on the shell that never happened .
i've got it to turn over but need to hook a few things back up to get it running >>>>>>>>>>>
a 2.7 touring isn't a bad weapon i spose

i remember seeing this and thought the guy was going to restore it. It did look pretty rotten/knackered to be honest. I wonder how the 2.7 with a 320 head works, plenty of torque i bet. Is it worth putting the 2.5 head and inlet system on ?
Nice project also.

cheers jim
.
i'm not sure why the m20 head is used or what's involved in making an eta 2.7
i'm sure someone on here will know ...

I'm sure there was a wiki article about the various different ways of doing it?

Yer, there is a good article.
Personally I would do the following (i've done this twice now with good results)
ETA Block, crank, rods and pistons
325i Head and full inlet system
Lighten the flywheel, makes it much better to drive
Speedtouch as a chip for this. It's a proper chip which was mapped by Ant from ATech a few years ago and he has a copy. I used it in my 2.7 and it was a little screamer.
Using the ETA pistons is fine, the compression is still good and i was getting 170psi in each cylinder so can't argue with that.
It was a pleasure to drive also.

i managed to get the touring ready for the manual box , decided it easier to just remove the big brake pedal and leave the pedal box in situ . not the easiest job i've ever done but it's done now and i'm rather pleased
.

i now have the 2.7 ready to remove from the 2dr turd and ordered a new sump and rocker cover gasket as per rule of thumb . i'll check the clutch and rear crank seal when i do this and degrease the engine before it get's re-fitted .

So thats just a normal eta engine, they were 125bhp or so from the factory. loads of torque and it was all about MPG's. the 325i inlet will yield more power but without a 325i head and a decent cam it won't make all that tbh
If it had a 325i head then it would be a super eta which bmw also made for a short time
Jim 170psi is low imo. Most decent 325 engines or 2.7 builds are 200psi plus

I'm just going to plop it in the touring and see what it behaves like , i've got a spare 325i head in the garage that i might use at a later date but then again that might be left up to the new owner to sort out.
At least it's got potential

managed to pull the 6-pot donk out of the old rot box that surrounded it and started to clean things up a bit .

good oil seal

so off to the ranch for some gaskets and a clean up .

oil drained and found a BBTB while waiting for it to drain .

fitted sump gasket and started to clean the shit off , updates are now dependant on weather conditions .

i'm happy to stick it in the bay once cleaned up and leave it till spring now the great geordie cold front is kicking in on mount consett .

cheers mate , i want to just lob it in and fire it up but now thinking of getting the 325i head i've got worked on at the place that put my bottom end together, get it all tested and the valve stems done and see if the do porting ? it'll mean a full overhaul like ... i could put it all together as is so it's running then change the head after the work is done and get some comparisons from both set ups .
i do plan to run this on the road for a bit before i let it go , gotta make sure it's right innit

well the first pic looks a bit grim if that's what i'm presented with every-time the bonnet is opened .

i have a better rocker and inlet to put on that i've had stashed away that i wanted to fit but had to order a new inlet manifold gasket set and looking forward ... a propshaft centre bearing
i've been held up waiting for gaskets so done a bit more cleansing .
now this looks like it's had work done , maybe enlarged ? but at least ported .

and just as it was getting tastey it started f00kin snowing

way the new lump is in and fires up, big thanks to MR more the zones electrical guru on the auto-manual black/yellow wire bypass , when things work it's feckin awesome
thought i'd show off the nice clean 320i box and fresh oil pic , got a good face-full of cold jetwash doing this .... more than once thank you

well i need to hook a radiator up ,i might as well go with an e36 328i a/c type rad that i've got stashed somewhere and do away with the 325i's header tank that i have no bracketory for with the car being an m40 so that looks like a better option .
anyway i've a few things left to finish before mot time , todays outside temp was -2 deg c .
note to self >>> antifreeze !

Love the HA HA bit !!!
it's a good feeling when you know it's gonna workjimbom30cab wrote:Love the HA HA bit !!!

i bought 5 ltrs of anti freeze for it and i've only stuck the shifter on the wrong way round , [ it was cold ] so i'm going to drop the box mount and remove the whole linkages and fit my old z3 short shifter while i rectify my mistake

when that's done i can fit the prop and exhaust then the rad and bleed it up .
then there will probably be teething issues as i spotted a misfire and i'm hoping it's just a plug/lead but the noise is too much for further investigation without the zaust fitted .

bit of an update and taking on board Simon's advice i'm going to use the 885 head i've got hidden away and and go with the super eta and most powerful bolt together option with no modification costs at all
bought the correct intake trunk , i've fitted the prop and new centre bearing and it now has a nice tight short shifter hooked up to a 320i box .
i'll be taking the 885 head to have a clean up and a bit of a service with new valve seals pressure tested etc before i fit it , i might as well produce some receipts and proof that things have been done correctly .

i bought febi valve stem seals though .
i'm running one on my own car and it's held good for 2 yrs... touch wood

what bhp and torque figures should this produce with the 325i head ?

i've dropped the cylinder off head at the engine shop and told him no real rush for it back but it'll be January sometime i reckon . we found a snapped stud on exhaust port number 6 and yess it's the obligatory lower one that other people don't need that i'm having drilled out and sorted out .
the old boy seemed quite happy to hear about this super eta 2.7 build as he mainly rebuilds scooby's, cozzies and the likes for other peoples projects .
hope you all had a great Christmas

While you're there, or before you put the head on. Think abount investing in some ARP head studs, after a few years of driving around with a 2.7, eta piston 885 head car I am finally going to do something about the mediocre CR and am at the point of having 1 stud added at a time... That being said. My 2.7 abomination was seeing ~187hp and 277nm on the dyno, should be a nice ride.
I also used FEBI parts, like rockers and etc, works fine. For years now.
Should be a nice ride when done.
