Afternoon,

I am finally getting round to replacing my shocks and springs on my '90 cabbie, I'm staying OEM, and it looks like the kit fitted has been there since 1990. I have new shocks and springs ready for fitting.

Simple (maybe stupid) questions:

1) What extras will I / should I get? (Like top mounts, pads for the springs etc .......)

2) Best place to get these extras?

Thank you for any advice.

New top mounts, wheel bearings, pads, discs, lower arms, lollipop bushes, the list can go on.

Replace what's worn looking tired and give the arches a good clean, take the inner wing liners out and clean the bottoms of the inside of the wings.

Sort any rust and put it all back together.

Thank you Sanchez,

I intended to treat the car and get some Bilstein B4 shocks and H&R springs in the spring next year so was saving up for them, then the starter motor let go!!, but recently the shocks/springs have got to a state where the car is getting undriveable, I think I've snapped the front drivers side spring the other night on the M11 when I hit a dip/hole!!, its my daily and I can't stretch to Bilsteins/H&R set up at the mo - so I've just got some shocks off ecp and some second hand springs to tide me over 'til I get the Bilsteins.

Over the last year I have been through the brakes, bearings, bushes and lower arms and replaced all of them (including engine), the shocks and springs were next on the list - the only thing I've done for the shocks is put E46 cabbie top mounts on the rear as the old ones were shot.

The only thinks you should change which would be part of the shocks and springs replacement job are the top mounts. If you fancy changing the rubber seat for the front springs thats cool but not necessary if the old one is still present!

Wheel bearings / bushes etc can be swapped without touching the shocks and springs.

For top mounts it is said the E46 cab top mounts for the rear are the best replacement option but I am not convinced the OEM ones would ware out.

Go to BMW for parts and if you want a bit cheaper www.carpartsforless.co.uk

Excellent - just ordered new top mounts for the front.

Already got the E46 ones for the rear. The rubber on the OEM rear mounts had torn to shreds and the metal collar holding the top of the shock was pretty much floating free ! The E46 ones certainly appear to be much stronger/thicker than the originals, and they made a hell of a difference on the rear of the car (well to be honest a beer mat would have been an improvement).

Anything else needing replacement can wait 'til I get the bilsteins.

Thank you all for responses.
