Hiya
I've got an E30 Coupe 318is engine spot on now.
It's currently Calypso Red and in a really bad state.
Definitely needs a re spray but I really do love the dolphin grey Bmw colour thinking hard about a full colour change.
What's your views ? Calypso Red .. Is it really a rare colour? Paint job won't have any expenses speared.. But would it lower the rate of value increases over the years?

I would say yes, go for it if you intend on keeping the car for a while. Calypso red, although a nice colour when in good condition, is a red that will inevitably fade as most reds do.
Dolphin grey does suit E30s rather nicely.
I suppose it could potentially lower the value, but it's your car and your choice; you could always have it resprayed again, should there happen to be a sudden high value commanded for Calypso red 318is' at some point...

That's a good point; according to the Zone Wiki, the 318is never came in Calypso red:

Personally I would find out the original colour of the car and do it in that.

I'd paint it the grey. A lowly 318 isn't going to be worth much in years to come as its not a sought after car.

To paint a car a different colour properly is a laborious task which will cost many thousands on top of the body work by the time you have replaced everything that WILL be broken or tatty that you have to remove.

I love the calypso red colour,i bought a rotter just on this basis,a recolour is a total ballache,i should know i just changed a blue cabbie to alpineweis white, not easy to do
,if you have deep pockets go for it,i did mine myself and would not do it again, think carefully, grey only in my eyes is a bit boring ,but i grew up with them
and have had loads so just remember if its not rare and you dont want to flip it,its your car do what you want

As said above, a complete colour change is a much more involved job than a re-spray in the same colour, very much more if you do the engine bay.

if you do re paint it = defo do the same colour as original. It will be a better job.
