On start up yesterday I had the usual "check" flashing on the cluster. I pressed the brake pedal and the led on the cc panel went out but the check was still flashing with no illuminated leds. Pressed the check button on the cc panel and it seems the engine oil led isn't working any more. Question is, if the led is dead would that cause the check light on the cluster to flash or is there something more sinister going on?

The only way to answer that is to try a different 'check' panel.
Just the LED failing would be unlikely to make the check light flash, but it's unlikely that the actual LED is the problem. The fault is likely to be buried deeper in the electronics and might well cause the symptoms you describe.
I've seen the odd panel with a LED not working, but AFAIK, the check light would still flash as normal if a fault was detected.

The electronics inside the module in the roof. No circuitry is available for this, so opportunity for repairs is limited. IIRC, there's a few diodes on the circuit board that can be checked, but swapping the unit would be my first (and easiest) move.

See if you can get one sale or return from someone on here. I'm fairly sure it'll be 'sale' if you want to fix the fault.
